Is it normal to hate when people refer to me as "sweetie" or "dear"?

If I'm having a conversation or simply bringing up an important topic, occasionally the person I'm talking to will respond and end the sentence with, "sweetie" or "dear" and even, "honey" - it's something that my mother used to say, and so when I hear other people say it to me, it sounds... condescending? It's as if I'm being spoken to as a mere child, and sometimes, people who are younger than me might say this.

It is normal to dislike it?

In my experience, it can be condescending depending on who is saying it. Others, have called be these things and it has been more of a term of endearment.

I've had this problem when I'm trying to get service at Walmart. They use the words "honey" and "sweetie" to mask their horrible customer service skills.

You people are idiots. People say that shit to be nice, cus they care about you. But if you keep pushing people away by being so childish and virulent, so be it, then no one will say nice things to you.

I just moved to the south and I've noticed that it is MUCH MORE common than where I grew up.

It's an extremely condescending thing to do. Super rude. My personal least favorite is the half-assed "hon".

my husband says "yes dear" just to annoy me because i hate it. i hate being called babe or baby too. it makes you feel like your 5 years old. so i agree with you totally.

This drives me crazy too. Usually if it's someone considerably older than me I don't mind too much but if someone near my age says it, especially my wife, it enrages me to no end. And I would agree it tends to just sound condescending.
