Is it normal to hate w a passion musicians who rewrite others' works?

You know all those new songs that just take old classic songs and turn it into a rap? I hate it so much it almost makes me want to cry out of anger. And it pisses me off more when people don't even know that they didn't write the damn song and give them praise for writing such a beautiful song. I wish I could punch them in the face!
Am I overreacting, or do others feel this way too?

A lot of the old classic songs did exactly the same thing. It's not something that rap started by any stretch of the imagination. Songs performed by artists such as Bobby Darin and Elvis Presley were copied from foreign language songs with new lyrics written in English. Rock bands such as Led Zeppelin were also guilty of copying songs - for example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTsvs-pAGDc

If I hear a cover or a sample in a song I like, I usually end up buying the original song and then I listen to other music by the original artist. I've discovered many many "new" (to me) artists this way. I love love samples and remakes for this very reason!

  • We shouldn't accuse one artist for starting this, though.
