Is it normal to hate those who don't appreciate artists?

I don't really care that much if people don't like a piece of music or art or film, but when people call it gay and pretentious because they don't like or understand it grinds my gears. I'll use Shia LaBeouf's recent short film of Fjogur Piano by Sigur Ros as an example. I totally appreciate that people may not understand the film and that it may not be their type of entertainment, but as I scroll through the comments I am infuriated by the "if I don't understand it it's stupid" mentality that is so pervasive today.

I know symbolism, art and "hipster" stuff isnt for everybody but I really think people need to appreciate the fact that a piece of art is literally a chunk of the artist's soul being put on display. As a musician, the most hurtful thing is to be called pretentious after spilling my heart out for people.

I'm not a violent person but when I see people being so ignorant and hurtful towards such a raw display of emotion I just want to punch them. I feel that even if someone doesn't like it they should appreciate the impact it has on the world and respect how art can be the only thing some people have to hold on to. Any thoughts? :)

Yes, it is normal to hate peoples' ignorance like that.

This is often the result of frustration at not being able to understand something. Rather than being violent (which won't solve the problem), try to explain and take someone else along for the ride. Try to wake up their interest. They may even one day owe you a debt of gratitude for having experienced something they never would.

This is idealistic, by the way. Most people aren't going to be open-minded enough. There's no harm trying, though. As long as you keep it on the right side of pretentious and go slowly. :)

I think ignorance is a very common bug. It's a shame becouse the culture of consume has made it even more common. I trully believe that if the media stops putting crap on air, there would be less people like this. I'm not saying like, hate pop songs or anything, it's just some music or films that are made by the objective of selling and not as an art form. Business and art just shouldn't be so close.

I honestly think that if more people read this it'll open their mind a little. This touched me. And I do believe those people don't know they feeling because they're not strong enough to express what's in their hearts like you are. It is a shame that even if they don't like it, they can't even respect it.

I personally despised "Tree of Life". Probably one of the most pretentious, boring films I had ever seen.

Yes, I know it's an "art film". But do you want to know what my beef is with most art films? The people behind the cameras don't care if the audience doesn't like their film, they just wan to make the film that they want to make. They could care less about entertaining the audience. They just want to make their crappy, "deep" magnum opus. But if you're not going to try to entertain people with your film, why are you bothering making movies in the first place? That's why film exists. It's to entertain its audience with its story, whether it's sad, happy, or even unpleasant. But as long as the audience feels like they're glad they saw the movie, and glad that this story was told to them, even if it was depressing, then the film succeeded.

"Tree of Life" did not entertain its audience. People walked out of the theaters, and yet it's critically acclaimed. Why? How can a movie that failed to satisfy so many people be deemed a "masterpiece"? How can a movie that failed to keep people in their seats for more than ten, twenty minutes be considered a good movie?

And you know what? I don't care that I didn't get the movie. I don't care that I didn't get it's deep meanings, or its themes, or why the hell the footage of earth being created had ANYTHING to do with the "plot" of Brad PItt and his family. I don't care that I didn't get it because it was boring. Because it was trying to say something spectacular, but at the end of the day, it doesn't matter because the plot, or what little there was, was BORING.

So because I didn't "get" an art film like the "Tree of Life", I'm not allowed to despise it? Because I didn't "get" the film, I can't say that it's one of the most boring films to ever be put on screen? Because I didn't "get the film, I can't say that if any one else besides Terrence Mellick made this film that it would have been slammed by the critics, but because Mellick made it, it's a masterpiece?

And you know what? I don't care if that movie was literally a piece of Mellick's soul literally put onto film. I don't care if Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain put every single ounce of their soul into their performance. Because the movie was not good. I don't care if this project meant everything to the director, because it was not good. I don't care if Mellick wasted years of his life to make this film (Oh wait- he did), I can't appreciate it, because he obviously didn't care about entertaining his audience enough to make them stay more than twenty minutes in the theater!

You think I'm going to appreciate a canvas with just a red line across it just because the artist put their very soul into it? You think I'm going to appreciate any novel, any movie, any piece of art just because the artist "put their soul" into it? No. No, I won't. I will appreciate a piece of art because I think it's GOOD. There is no point in complimenting someone for putting their soul into something if it's not GOOD. If it's not GOOD, then there is no point in appreciating it. I will not appreciate the canvas with the red line across it because I don't think it's GOOD.

I will not appreciate "Tree of Life" because it's not GOOD, whether or not Mellick put his very soul into the film. I will NOT appreciate this particular art film because the director put part of his soul into it. I will NOT refrain from expressing my dislike for it because the artist (the director) put his work "on display" in movie theaters for people to see.

If you don't like it if someone hates something solely because they don't understand it fine, but don't you dare say that you get offended every time someone calls something you poured your heart and soul into "pretentious". Don't you dare say that just because a piece of art is a part of someone's soul that we should appreciate it.

Because you can put your heart and soul into something and make it pretentious. You CAN put your heart and soul into something, and the result becomes bad enough for people to turn the other way and not appreciate it.

....Jesus, that was a long rant O_o

I agree, but what if it has no meaning, like Kate Nash's songs for example? I don't hate her, I'm just saying.

But yeah, people who work hard and share their art, acting, music, etc. with the world and have a positive impact deserve to be respected.
