Is it normal to hate television, movies, and fictional books?

I am a woman in my twenties and was wondering if its normal to dislike all television shows, movies and fictional books. I have nothing against people who like the above things, but no matter how hard I try I cant get interested in any of these. There is literally no tv show or movie that I have EVER been interested in. Same with fictional books. When I try to watch/read them I get so bored that I give up. I do not have a problem with attention span because I can spend 6+ hours practicing music, or reading non fiction books about certain topics. This problem makes it nearly impossible to carry a conversation with any person since I never have anything to contribute and everyone seems to talk about movies, tv etc.. I feel that I am only interested in things that are "real" and have no interest in stories, plots, characters etc...I like non fiction books because I feel that I can learn a skill or applicable knowledge. The topics I like are jazz, prog, and music theory, as well as electronics (especially relating to music). Is anyone else like this? I cant seem to broaden my interests and it has a negative impact on my social life.

That is not very normal, as in common, no. There is nothing wrong with it though. Potential friends might think you're kind of strange though.

I wish more people were this way in reading constructively about learning for themselves. I think it is a shame more people are not like you because you are right about affecting you socially. People probably think you are socially awkward because of your interests being radically different as my own interests are similar to yours.

I'm the complete opposite. It's not common, but not a bad thing. You like what you like.

To not enjoy any sort of TV or Film, is just weird to me. It's sad becuase she's missing out on so much, and it's also affecting her social life.

I actually have a friend a lot like you. I don't see your interest as a concern; however, as Shackleford said it could pose a problem when meeting people. Associate with people who have the same interests as you and everything should be alright.

What about non-fictional TV like documentaries about subjects you are interested in?

    • I suppose those would be nice, if they were on tv frequently enough for me to watch. Thanks for your input!

Ahh, you're welcome. They're on TV a lot here and are most of what I watch. I find fictional TV to be really poor quality these days.
