Is it normal to hate talented people?

I'm a music major in college and I play the saxophone. I've played it for about ten years. When I graduate, I want to play in an Air Force band for a living. I work really hard at it. I practice about four hours a day everyday. More on weekends. This guy who is mainly a piano player has only been playing sax for about three or four years as a secondary instrument. He's almost as good as me. It makes me so angry. My greatest desire is to play saxophone in the military. It makes me feel stupid for having my dream. What if there are a bunch of other people out there just like him and I can't make it in? It only makes me want to work harder. It's maddening and frightening.

Yes there are more people like him. If this motivates you to work harder then by all means work harder. Some other guy might be in your shoes right now looking at you the way you look at those talented people. Don't feel stupid for having your dream. Lots of people don't have it anymore while others might not even ever had any. Go for it.

You just haven't foud your talent yet. Everyone has one, but yours might be different from his. You just have to discover what you're best at. But if you really want to play sax in the military, then just keep practicing and working at it. It doesn't matter if you're not the best, as long as you feel confident in your performance.

I took a college art class once and I knew what to draw, I just couldn't get it to cooperate on paper the way I wanted it too. I did well with art in middle school. Everybodys art work in the classroom looked better than mine. I was very intimidated and did not want the teacher to notice in fear of potential criticism. It is unnerving to be decent at something and then go somewhere and find yourself in a room full of people who seem lots better.

It sounds like you're jealous. But you shouldn't be, because you're obviously a talented sax player. Good luck achieving your dream:)

A person who has experience with a musical instrument (piano) normally learns a new instrument (sax) quickly.

Don't give up on your dream. You've been playing for 10 years you're probably good. Keep working hard, it got you to college it'll get you your job.

So do just that, work harder. And take it easy there, obviously you're talented too. People always need practice. Even when you're born with a gift, you still need to practice. Don't be so hard on yourself, and there's always gonna be someone who might be on a different and higher level then you are, but you'll make it there. How do you think they made it there? When you know you got something, you keep on building it.

I believe that some people being naturally gifted should not be a hinderance to you. Like "Sailorvenus" said, if it motivates you to work hard than work harder. If it takes you longer or requires more work on your part, than it's most likely going to be more self rewarding for you. I myself, having personally climbed a real mountain (lol) know how difficult that is. When I finally reached the top, one of the first thoughts that came to me was "this beautiful view from the top of this mountain is worth it because of how hard it is to get here". Think of your situation as that mountain. If I could perform a single leap and make it at the same spot, it would be far less satisfying. Right now I'm in fitness and I want you to know this. I hope there is ALWAYS someone better than me. I hope there is always someone who excels beyond my reach. I truly do, and do you know why? because if I know there's someone better out there, then I know there's room for growth; and I know that if there's ALWAYS someone better out there, that room for growth is infinite and expansive on a endless scale of possibilities. Keep doing what you're doing. When you have to work, don't let others pull you down, let them push you up. ^_^

That's pretty great advice. It is good to always have something towards. When I see someone develop that quickly, it just makes me wonder if I stand a chance. I just wish I could have some certainty that all of my hard work will pay off. I just need to keep working without letting it affect me too much and hope for the best.

^_^ yea, just keep pushing yourself. If you're having to work harder than the other guy, then your eyes are ALWAYS on the goal. Just don't take them off. Let the hard times affect you, just in a way that can benefit your dreams. Take negative feelings, analyze them, and then harness them into positive motives to get you from one place to the other.
