Is it normal to hate rap and hip-hop?

I'm 26 and I've never gotten why rap and hip-hop are so popular with my generation. When I hear it, all I hear is negativity spoken/sung to a beat that somehow sounds dischordant and tuneless at the same time.
It wouldn't bother me so much, but I feel people who like rap seem to be all proud of it like it's some kind of accomplishment. I don't go rubbing my personal preferences in their faces! What's so great about a bunch of pissy people who never smile half-singing about drinking and getting laid?

  • Hip-hop and rap is very diverse, and what you speak of is what I would consider pop-rap. All that talk about what I got that you don't, how many people I've slept with, and what I'm sipping on... I agree with you. That's garbage. However, I would not hate an entire genre when there are other forms of rap as well. For instance, political rap with actual substance and messages, and gospel rap with religious messages. Rap is just an art of expression through words, but what you dislike is what many people are expressing. I like rap, but I dislike rappers who use it to express stupid messages. And I also dislike fans of it. Like what are you supporting? Their lavish lifestyle that does nothing for you. As for the half-singing that doesn't go with the beat... There's bad rappers just like there are bad singers and actors lol. Anyways, much of what you hear on the radios nowadays is what I will consider the downfall of hip-hop. Just my opinion though ;)

I couldn't have answered this better myself. That's exactly my opinion too.

Why would you feel like you "need" to like hip hop anyways?

Modern rap is shit with lil' wayne and jayz, but if you dig deeper and got into the past a bit there are real gems out there. In NZ and Japan there are also very good interesting hip hop cultures. Hip hop was established in an effort to get youth away from gangs and off the streets. However the Gangstah rap movement started in '92 with Dr. Dre's "the Chronic" and is what you are referring to. Artists i would recommend are de la soul, tribe called quest (both formed in the late 80s and part of the Native Tongue Posse, a group established to promote peace amongst black youth), Che-Fu and the Teriyaki Boys are both good international artists.

    Counter question:
Is it normal to be repetitive?

    See what I did there?

Yes, your hatred of rap/hip-hop is normal. There is good music in all genres though, it is just harder to find sometimes.

    • Remember the days when everyone would say: Why so serious? (from Batman) I like to say: Why so repetitive?

I agree that there's good music in all genres but it's hard to find some sometimes. Especially when half the time people sing about having money, having sex with a girl on a dance floor or being in "da hood". We fucking heard this a billion times, these people need to STFU about it in my opinion.

I could not possibly agree with you more! I like the Batman reference too :)

My music collection consists of about 99 percent rock music... I have maybe two rap songs out of the 1072 songs that is my current library.

I'm kind of the same way. I'm a teenager but I don't like rap. I love metal, rock, and country and some of my favorite music is from the 60's-90's.

  • Name the genre/s of music you like and I guarantee you there is someone with the same opinion of what you like. There's good and bad in every genre and I like to focus on the good. I love me some Country, Metal, Jazz and even Rap. At the end of the day people are going to like what they can relate to. If that means drinking and having sex to some, so be it.

You just don't dig the genre and that's cool. I don't really play videogames anymore,I could preach to you al day about how they waste time and money but the truth is if I enjoyed them I'd let them waste my time and money. Don't say how terrible rap is all the time, just don't listen to it. No worries and Led Zeppelin is dope. XD lol

Comepletely mainstream music these days is mostly crap it seems. Just look a little bit past the radio and you might find something amazing. Pandora is great for finding new music if you have a starting point.

Gorillaz, and Deltron 3030 have some great rap/hip-hop that isn't about sex and crap, also Fort Minor is good from what I've listened to. Just telling you if you want to give any of them a go.

  • I use to "hate" it too, but now I LOVE it. It seems like they are starting to put more effort into blending it with some funky beats/melodies and the topics of the songs are more sophisticated.

I still have a very strong dislike of country music; I'm not sure I could ever get past it though.

Me too. I use to hate it but grew to respect it and I rather enjoy some of it. And country is just awful, although there are a few musicians I will make exceptions for. Talent is talent however it manifests.

  • Rap can be amazing when done right, it's just a shame it doesn't happen as often anymore as it did. Maybe try checking out some stuff from the golden age of hip-hop, like Public Enemy, A Tribe Called Quest or even Grandmaster Flash.

Not many people seem to like rap/hip-hop, but it's not always like you say, there are some that actually have meaningful lyrics (not like the crap u hear on the radio these days) that has nothing to do with sex, drugs, etc. and also has a nice tune not just hard beats and remixes. but yeah i'd say it's normal to feel like that about most mainstream rap tho...
