Is it normal to hate people who use the term ocd?

OCD has become so trendy these days. People have watched tv and now suddenly they are qualified to diagnose it in other people? I mean really. I could post a question saying is it normal that I always put my right shoe on first, and a bunch of idiots will jump in with the response: "totally OCD"

Or worse, people who over use the term and refer to themselves as having OCD just because they have a couple habits but have never been diagnosed by a professional.

Is it normal that I get so annoyed by these morons?

haha yea it is annoying. I've been diagnosed by a Psychiatrist with OCD and extreme anxiety. I take meds for it and all. Before hand i would like count the number of steps i took before a turn and it would have to be in multiples of seven. and when someone said something, it had to be in multiples of 5 or i would correct them and have them rephrase the sentence so i could fit my compulsion. and i would have full blown panic attacks if i got a bad mark on a classwork assignment, because i thought it meant i wasn't going to get an A in the class and that meant I was going to do bad in school and I wouldn't go to college... so on so on. So yea people who are like 'I'm OCD because I bite my nails' really piss me off

Yes! I was actually diagnosed with a severe case of OCD that started when I was 7 years old and it got so out of control that I had to start taking medication for it at age 14. It annoys me that people trivialize the condition by applying it to normal habits. Real OCD involves stuff like changing your PJs multiple times because you can't sleep because you think a piece of dirt might have gotten on you. Or washing your hands till they crack and bleed because you kept using the "wrong" towel to dry them off with. Or not being able to hug your own dad because he worked at a job that made him "unclean". I had all of those symptoms. So whenever I hear someone who can't stop checking their Facebook saying they're being "OCD" about it, I want to throat-punch them. :)

same thing happened to depression, adhd, and quite a few others, at lest ocd doesn't have anyone have anyone say "hey u could totally be fine with this mess, ur chosing to be ocd" like depression

Yeah most people don't actually know what OCD, and yes it can be annoying. Some of my friends clearly do not understand mental illness at all so they come off very insensitive about OCD/anxiety/depression, even if they don't mean to be, which makes me feel even more like something's wrong with me.

I ALWAYS put on my right shoe first. Doesn't mean that I am OCD.....just superstitious. lol

  • I have undiagnosed OCD, my dad has it too. It's not crazy, but it definitely is OCD. I don't mind when people say it to me, because it's true, but if they do something like laugh weird or make a face and someone says they have OCD, I get annoyed. OCD DOES NOT MEAN RETARDED! Not even close... If you are going to use it, use it right.
