Is it normal to hate novels about rape?

Anything by Khaled Hosseini is really pathetic depressing and hopeless. I always avoid him. So he writes about gay characters in the Kite Runner. And I can't wrap my head around the fact that a man rapes another man and likes him so much that when the man he raped has a son, he rapes him as well.

Is it me or is that disgusting?

I think that book is beautiful, even though it is very depressing for most of it. The way I see it is that the rape in the book is never really about him liking men. It's pretty clear that the character who does the raping is homophobic - he uses the word "faggots" often at the start of the book, and if I remember correctly he might even condemn about homosexuality directly. Although I know that doesn't mean he isn't gay, I think it's made very clear in the book that the rapes are about power and domination and if there is any kind of attraction it's not important.

It is disgusting though. You are right. Those scenes designed to make the reader feel extremely uncomfortable and disgusted, which is why I think they're so good even though I hate them. I feel like the scenes are necessary for the plot.

Rape as a subject matter is always going to be too dark for a lot of people, so I think it's normal to feel that way. I've avoided reading books before because the themes of sexual violence were a bit too distressing for me. The Kite Runner is an exception for me because I feel like the few scenes where there is sexual violence are the most well-written in the book, and they're very important to the story. It also helped me that the first time I read the book was for school rather than for pleasure, so I was a bit less emotionally invested in it.

I used to work in a book store a while ago and customers would often complain about his books. I've never read any of them myself, but -yeah- I do believe you're normal.
