Is it normal to hate lyrics in songs?

I hate listening to songs with lyrics. There are a few exceptions, but that's mainly because I like the actual music too much to pass it up. I can never understand exactly what they're saying and I feel like they get in the way of the music. I know some songs are made for lyrics and they wouldn't be complete without them, but those are usually the kinds of songs that really annoy me, especially songs from people like Lady Gaga, Owl City, or Ke$ha, most rock songs, and literally 100% of all Hip-hop and Rap. Because of this, my music library consists of almost all electronic indie/experimental styles of music.

Is this normal?

Most of my songs in my library are instrumental songs too, so you're normal and you're not alone! Some songs have nonsense or annoying lyrics and those bad lyrics make the song bad even if that song has a nice melody or music! A song is only good if both the lyrics and music are nice or pleasing to hear, so I avoid listening to songs with bad lyrics or bad words! I don't like Lady Gaga and her songs too! So you're not alone! Not everyone listen to every pop artists! I only listen to a few, likeable and unpopular / underrated artists or mostly instrumental songs...

If you don't like Owl City lyrics, then you are simply not normal. Sorry.

Yes it is very normal, join the club :) I've been a techno fan for ages, since I was 10, and I've listened to almost all kinds of music since then. Rock is ok, but in my opinion just a flashy form of pop. Pop=smd and gdiaf. etc etc. I prefer more emotional types of music, and I agree, modern pop music is unbelievably dumb. It's background music, built to sell. It means nothing and no feelings were put into it. Maybe I'm wierd, but I prefer listening to two completely different genres in general. Techno and metal. Metal because it embodies the raw emotion and teenage angst many people look for, and it's often made from bands who look to create emotion not money. Techno because like you said, it embodies emotion without words getting in the way. Its like emotion funneled into a computer in the best way. It's just with metal music that I think the words compliment the music. For techno I've listened to many types, from rave and trance, to eurodance and ambient and house. I don't like acid, it sounds too outerworldly. I mainly prefer progressive trance and eurodance/dance/rave music. Just putting my two cents of shit out there :)

  • Dude, your just like me. I love house and trance. And whenever a new tune comes out that I like (which nowadays is rare) I spend my time learning the beat. Instead of learning the lyrics IF it has them. I'm a very unique kind of guy. So as my music genre isn't that popular around me, I feel the more people dislike the music, the more there is for me to like. Very hard to describe.

The songs that you have heard with lyrics, the ones that supposedly "wouldn't be complete without them" are quite frankly crappy. Yeah yeah, my opinion. There's so much music out there is all and more people should listen to it even though it isn't in the charts right now.

Sometimes I don't feel like music with lyrics either. Experimental electronic music can be excellent. I like the NIN instrumentals.
