Is it normal to hate homeless people a lot?

It's not all homeless people, but every time I see a 30 something, able-bodied person on the side of the road asking for money I want to break their spine and give them a reason to need help from others. I don't see why I have to give my HARD EARNED money to somebody who is more than capable of working just as hard as I do. I've tried to get over this and even made a conscious effort to give money to every homeless person I encounter with the hope that I would be cured of my lack of genuine charity. I feel good when I give money to organizations, but I still hate a healthy homeless person. Is it normal?

NO, its not normal to HATE them SO MUCH. it might annoy you then just IGNORE it. no one is forcing you to give them money, just don't hate or even think about hurting them.

  • Funny. I don't see a lot of able-bodied homeless, only the kinds that seem like there's something wrong with them mentally...
and I'm sure glad they are not a part of the working community.

Plus, I have no clue how hard their life was before they came to live on the streets, so I try not to judge them as lazy.

Maybe I'm just bumping into the wrong bums.

Exhibit A: A homeless lady walked into my wife's work and attacked my wife (grabbed my wife's head and slammed it into a glass display) for NO REASON and unprovoked. My wife just up and RAN away from her..terrified.

Exhibit B:I gave one dude a dollar (was all the cash I had and this particular bum didn't take Visa) after he stalked me for a city block trying to sell me some random DVD's. Upon receiving the dollar, he just looked at me and said , "A dollar? What can I get with a dollar?" I was like, "Give it back then." Of course he didn't. He just threatened to "swoop" me and made some gesture like he was going to take out my legs. Side note: this guy would have been a very successful used car salesman due to his perseverance and pretty good communication skills.

Exhibit C: I bumped into a guy on the side of the road while on my way home from the grocery store. He had a sign which read "ANYTHING helps." So I had a car full of groceries and I reached back and grabbed the first large food item I could find. It happened to be a full can of expensive brand pistachios (that I didn't want to give away). Upon receiving them, he looked at me all disgusted and said all sarcastically, "Well I was actually hoping for money."

For the record, I love people and I love giving to organizations and do so regularly. I don't feel obligated to help anyone in this dog eat dog world, but I like to help. I just believe that beggars can NOT be choosers. Also, I don't mind helping out the lady in the wheel chair or the war vet. I also recognize that each situation is a judgement call. It's the kid that would rather beg for free money then go work at McDonald's that pisses me off. I don't want to enable that kid.

Bums would go away ENTIRELY if we stopped giving them handouts and put our money into ORGANIZATIONS to help them. But I guess that's not as convenient as straight to your window service.

  • I always give anyone and everyone I see that's homeless money. I don't care if their using it for crack or whatever the case may be. I just sleep better at night knowing that I gave someone the opportunity to eat for another day. Whatever they decide to spend it on is their choice.

Its just a couple of bucks whats the fuckin big deal? Most times I dont even think twice about giving to bums and what not. Except if I see the same bummy guy on the same corner bumming every day then I say nay and save my spare change for more stranger and exotic bums of which ive never seen before. Im a weirdo. But an awesome one.

I love this comment. But my frustration has nothing to do with money. I can afford it.

Agreed. But I don't hate them, I hate what they represent about our society on SO many levels. They do have one of the oldest professions known to man. It's the ones who could do something else that frustrate me...AND the ones who are total A-holes.

i'm kind of scared of them and i roll up my windows and lock my doors when i see one panhandling. but then i feel guilty for being so prejudice. but i've never given one of them money. but i've never felt anger towards them.

I see where you're coming from, but at the same time it must take them some big balls to beg for money. You'd have to set every ounce of pride aside which isn't something I'd be able to do. I hardly ever give them money though because you never know what they're using it for.

I'd rather buy a homeless person a sandwich. You never know what your money is going towards.

I thought you were saying you hated them in the sence that like you kick them and stuff, but to not give money is totaly normal, especialy if you work hard for it, and even more especialy if the homeless spend it on drugs or alcohol, wich is often the case.

  • Then fix it ;) from what you see, the problem lies in them being lazy. Or drugs. Or alcohol. Because what able-bodied person begs? Someone who wants the easy way out (lazy). Or, they're not really able-bodied (drugs). Or perhaps their body is able, but their mind isn't? Drugs, attitude problem, etc. So, my friend, I've given you some possible problems that can be solved, now how are you going to fix it ? ;)

Thanks. I remember being young and taking all sorts of drugs. I still held two jobs and just looked homeless. But maybe what you're saying is that I should identify the problem (possibly one of which you laid out in your post) on a case by case basis?

I don't like to give to organisations coz they pay their staff higher wages than normal. I give to the homeless - if they are conning me then it's their conscience, not mine!

I'm pretty sure walmart will hire anyone. Even tho I'd think I'd rather beg 4 money then work there.

I feel like that's what a lot of homeless people decided. Homeless? Or Walmart? Homeless.

How do you know they are able-bodied? They might have a mental problem, or an addiction, or some other problem why they can't work. Nobody would lay down all their dignity like that to beg for money unless they had no other choice.

Anyway, you don't HAVE to give them momey. Nobody is forcing you to. I wouldn't recommend giving them money because, as BurnaBaby said, you have no idea what they will spend it on, and it's normally drugs or booze. Give to homeless charities if you want to help them. You said that you feel good about that anyway, so go ahead.

You would be surprised by the number of arested fake-homeless people that begs for money. I don't understand you when you say they take down their dignity by begging for money, that's the case for some poeple, but that's just a small percentage of homeless (I call them the true homeless). You are right when you say many of them have mental problem or addictions though, some of them are realy desperate.

Being homeless and begging is a lifestyle choice for some people, and they probably earn more than you and me put together!! $200 a day crack habits are easily paid for by getting 100 people to give $2. What could you do with $1400 a week??

Fuck them and use them for human testing the dirty disease of society.

I drive out of my way in order to go to gas stations and stores without bums outside. I'm down for helping the guys who do little odd jobs here and there like helping people to their car with groceries and such, but if you're gonna stand outside CVS all night telling me the million reasons you need money, you're words fall on deaf ears.
