Is it normal to hate hipsters but you actually might be one?

I make fun of hipsters all day long. Mocking them by using words like "post-modern" and "ironic." I just think they're so silly because of how easy they are to stereotype.

I am very philosophical artistic, and play bass in a band. I like music and art that actually mean something. People call the guitarist in my band a hipster even though I know he's not. And recently someone told me I was a hipster.

I just realized I didn't really answer your question at all - hopefully you enjoyed my answer anyway :)

This is a hilarious and awesome question to me. Guess it depends on how you define a hipster. I think the reason it's so easy to stereotype a "hipster" is because nobody seems to know what the heck that even means.

Some people think of it as a purely fashion. In that case - if you're wearing oversized glasses you found at the thrift store, low-cut v-neck tees from american apparel that show off your chest hair, a biker cap, and an "ironic" beard. You may be considered a hipster.

Some people think of it as just an attitude problem. As in one of my favorite jokes:

How many hipsters does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

Answer 1: "It's a really obscure number...you've probably never heard of it." (ha!!)

Answer 2: "I only listen to that on vinyl." (haha!)

Other more philosophical folks may consider a hipster to be someone who tries very hard to be authentic but instead ends up coming across to others as pretentious and overcompensating because they do not associate with anyone who doesn't look and act exactly as they do.

I don't really care what it means, but I think it's interesting - and I'd love to know what other people think is a hipster. If I had to choose I'd say attitude problem and philosophical approach to define them - which I guess go hand in hand. I think the fashion is fun :)

Hipsters are never a good fit for me. Have you tried high-rise?

As long as you do your own thing, then you're ok in my book.

    Just don't ''sell out,'' haha.

Im sad I'm saying this but I wore tight pants and liked the Black Keys before it was cool. Difference is I'll still like those things after they're cool.

If you realise this and actually mind, you're no hipster.

  • Do you own or wear any of the following:

    Leg warmers
    Large rimmed glasses
Old people shoes/knock-off old people shoes
    skinny jeans
    bright colored Chuck Taylor's
    Christmas sweaters (during summer)
    anything made of corduroy

Or, when describing something's meaning with your peers, do you use ever use the following words/phrases/reasoning:

    "Naturally!"

"That's counter-productive to the feminist movement."

"What's immoral, is morality, in general, in terms of the social confines of the destructive path of Conservatism, within the reigns of progressive spiritualistic, insightful, hate-spew on the nature of innocence; that once lost, can never be found upon our eternal threshold."

If so, please go jump off a bridge. And that's not a metaphor for anything ironic. Really, please.. you don't deserve to be pissing out that $10 cup of coffee on the same planet as the rest of us.

I hate hipsters because my last name is very similar. But I fit the bill.

I just saw some "unique" singer on tv yesterday. with knit hat, scarf and skinny jeans, he sounded like a thousand others. Personally I hate any group mentality or group association by appearance. be an individual, get your own opinion and life, and I doubt you'll ever think about this crap -- except to laugh at the brain dead zombies that have to join identify with some group.

You just have to like what you like, and not worry about it. Don't even waste energy hating on hipsters. What they do is annoying, but there are people who do much worse things.

I'm pretty sure you're not a hipster because you're artistic and play bass. Don't get your panties in a bunch.
