You would only know you have an accent if you are living in another country or region. Right? At home you have no accent.
Depending on where you are a British accent or understandable foreign accent can be a social asset especially attractive to members of the opposite sex. Feel free to love it and capitalize on it for that reason.
Adopting local accents is an option. I am from the midwest US, and my local accent is "hick". Country as opposed to "Southern". I traveled all over the world and lived as a young man and rather than learning the language since I was only each place for a few months I would just listen and adopt the local english accent. The response was so powerful you would have thought I was speaking Hindi or Urdu or Thai, nit english.
A good way to start is to play with it. Do impressions of the local accent for your friends. They will love it and you will learn.
south africans have accents that sound like british. i like british accents, and almost any foreign accents. i'm from southeast ohio, so i don't have a very pretty accent. i wish i did though :P
