Is it normal to harmonize rather than sing in unison with the radio?

Even when I was really little I never "interrupted" the singers on the radio by singing in unison with the melody. I liked to feel like I was singing with the singer, rather on top of him/her. This way, I could hear the song, as well as sing along. Usually I would do my own harmony and try to avoid using one of the harmonies already in the song. I thought this was normal my entire childhood, until I heard my friends singing the lead melody at a sleepover. So, is it normal? Do you sing the melody or harmonize like a back-up singer with the music you listen to?

I had a friend who would sing half a bar ahead of the lead. It used to drive me nuts.

I want to hear someone harmonise and if they won't I'll try it myself.

What's even worse is when your friend is always half a bar behind! I feel your pain man lol

I haven't seen someone sing a harmony when listening to music but that sounds pretty cool actually. Some people have a lot of troubles being able to harmonize melodies so consider it a talent that you can.

It means you have a more developed musical ear than your friends do. Keep it up--you could be a back-up singer one day. Don't knock it! It's steady work and you get to meet famous people and get paid for it!

I think you're not really asking the question--you're just bragging.

What an interesting question. I've done both things (probably slight more in favour of singing lead melody), but I enjoy it more when I try to layer another harmony on top. It's more creative (and helps me with writing my own music).

"Is it normal to harmonize rather than sing in unison with the music?" Doesn't sound right and "Is it normal to harmonize rather than sing in unison with music" sounds too vague. XD Don't be so mean! It's what I thought of at the time... You're so persnickety! And btw... I never lied about anything :( T.T

          • Just drop "the" from the sentence. It's not vague as that is, in effect, all you are doing.

And because nobody really uses a radio for this, it's even more accurate.

You SoN Of A BiTcH BaStArd!!?!

Used to the do that ALL the time as a kid. I always tried to match the vocals of the singers.

Now I'm a singer in a rock n' roll band.

    But not really.

    Normal though.
