Is it normal to hang on to insults for years?

I've had almost no self-esteem for a while now. Looking back, it seems like it started with a guy I "dated" almost seven years ago, who took every opportunity to tell me what an ugly, horrible person I was. Since then I haven't really been able to take any compliments seriously; it always seems like they're playing a cruel joke where they try to convince me that I might be a decent person so that I'll embarrass myself by acting on that. Is it normal to keep holding on to something like this for so long?

As jesusdiedlol said before you can love another you must love yourself it can be so hard to put things behind you but in my experience the best thing is to take the risk and try to trust that people are honest to you. Good luck

The person you went out with sounds like a right ol' knob. Some people just get off on insulting others to hide thier problems. Mu'fucka!
