Is it normal to grind your teeth when touching or petting cats?

My Five year old cousin grinds her teeth in her sleep, but during the day when she is just bouncing around she'll occasionally go and pet my cats. when she pets my cats she grinds her teeth and i sometimes catch her being too rough with them. Sometimes when she is singing, making up her own songs, she'll sing about "death" and when i say "you shouldn't talk like that" she'll laugh. Sometimes she just acts strange and im curious as to what this means. so give me your opinions! and advice!

I do something similar. I love cats, but whenever I'm petting a really cute animal I'm overcome with a feeling to want to hurt it. I always pegged it as a "you're so cute i could squeeze you to death" sort of thing. Maybe I'm just as abnormal as your cousin....

I would suggest that the grinding teeth and the morbid singing aren't related.

grinding of your teeth usually happens when asleep but it's not unheard of to also happen when awake. She probably doesn't realise she's doing it.

I would recommend discouraging the tooth grinding where possible as it can cause a great deal of damage to the teeth and if she is made aware of it at a young age, it is less likely to become a lifelong habit.

thanks for the comments and most of the time she is aware that she is doing it because when she does it she looks around to make sure no one is watching her and she will squeeze my cats. when she is near my cats i usually keep an eye on her and most of the time she doesn't notice me but i see her grind her teeth, make a weird face and squeeze my cats. she knows she is not supposed to do that because everyone is constantly telling her not to do it. but idk its just a little strange to me but it could just be a strange habit of some source but i have no idea.

  • It might be an affectionate thing? I have a habit of tensing my jaw when I pat my cats, and I'm a little rough. It's tough to explain, I just love my cats and it's how I react when I give them affection. There's this ball of love and feistiness inside me that needs to get lose when I play with my cats.
