Is it normal to go to the doctor when feeling ill?

Is it normal for a person who is in good general health to go to the doctor when feeling slightly ill?

I'm only addressing people who are in decent health otherwise and aren't feeling ill because of another issue such as medication/treatment side effects or some chronic condition. Small children, pregnant women, elderly and anyone with a compromised immune system are obviously excluded.

How normal is it to go to the doctor if you're feeling sick, have a cold or anything relatively minor along these lines?

Choose the answer that best describes what you'd "USUALLY" do and comment if you'd like to expand on your answer.

  • I only go if I feel severely sick and it doesnt seem to be going away on its own. I would never go for a common cold but I will go if I susspect I need antibiotics to get rid of whats going on.

No. 90% of the people who go to the doctor, the doctor can't do anything for, it's just something that takes time for the body to heal itself, and you're wasting their time and expertise.
The only time I've gone / i'll go to the doctor is when I know i have pink eye or strep throat, and i need a presciption anti bacterial.

  • I wouldn't go to the doctor's for a minor thing unless it'd been bothering me for a year or more or a have a bad feeling about it. If I'm sick more than a week, chances are it's just the flu. It's just a waste of everyone's time and I don't want to be one of those idiots who think antibiotics are always necessary.

On the other hand, my family hates doctors, but they also complain about things so much that I tell them to see one. If you're not going to see a doctor, don't complain... please.

On a related note, I also hate people who freak out over minor fevers. A fever to me is anything over 102. You have a "fever" of 101? Oh no, poor baby.

Sorry, I just hate people who clog up the medical system.

I only go to the doctor if either:

    - My illness lasts over a week
    - My symptoms are particularly severe
    - My symptoms are unusual i.e. not attributable to flu or similarly common viruses.

If none of those 3 reasons are present then I'll just let my immune system do its job and try and get plenty of rest. No point bothering doctors or nurses with trivial and temporary ailments.

I rarely go to the doctor. It's not like they can do anything for a cold. I've also been given bad treatments and misdiagnosed too many times. Doctors really don't like that I have my own theories on what's wrong with me and some have challenged my opinions for their own egotistical needs. I think I know my body better than they do.

"I think I know my body better than they do."

I hope that doesn't mean if some day you require surgery you'll whip out your own set of scalpels and get to work :P

Don't be silly, I'd ask my friend to bring home those disposable scalpels she uses at work and ask her to do it. :P

My dad's a doctor who doesn't trust doctors. Which is weird but anyways I'm just used to telling him my symptoms and doing whatever he tells me to do, so I only go to the doctor if I feel like I'm about to die or feeling severe pain that won't go away with pain killers.

In the past I've gone either because I already had a appointment or if something happened like if I broke something, or if I got sick and the symptoms persisted for more than one day,

I fucked mt nurse last time and they banned me. But docs are fun as fuck. You get to show people your dong legally and piss in a cup. I splashed in my doctors face.

If I'm honestly feeling that unwell, the last thing I want to do if leave the house and go into a public place with other sick people. I just want to lie on the sofa, watch TV and play Xbox.

I really dislike doctors, but lately I've been seeing them way too often...
My reasons aren't really listed. I go if I think the sickness can potentially become worse and get serious so I can stop it before that happens.

I go to the doctor when I am sick for over a week (experiencing full symptoms of a sickness, not just stuffy nose for a few days).
I go to a doctor for severe symptoms (as in, my infections of my foot and leg that made it incredibly difficult to walk, stomach pain that incapacitated me, these are rare).
I would go to a doctor if I am experiencing something highly unusual for my range of health.
I go for birth control and regular checks (I am starting the checks now because I have better insurance now).

    Generally, I'm in good health.
