Is it normal to give your number to a stranger you don't find hot?

I was biking home and some guy is oncoming and stops me, says he thinks I'm cute, and starts this conversation with me. Apparently we'll be going to the same college at the same university next year. This dude ended up walking away with my number, and is now texting me, and wanted to hang out with me tomorrow (I said no). I know this would be absolutely normal...if I thought he was attractive. But he's ugly. Is it normal that I didn't bike away quickly but instead gave him my number and acted normal? Anyone know what I should do now?

Text him something along the lines of "I should never have given you my number. I'm not interested in you. I'm sorry if I led you on". He'll accept your decision and move on. Maybe he'll be sad for a week, but that's all. It's the kindest thing to do for you both.

Thanks for asking that question because I hate it when that happens. A lot of the time I will tell the guy to give me his number instead and then just not call him. However, I'm now, at this stage in my life, tending to think of by coping method as codependent. I know there's got to be a better way.

I tend to tell a lot of men that I think of them as brothers. Although with certain individuals whom I'm genuinely fond of and share platonic friendship the statement is true. That being said I don't want to use the, "I think of you a brother", statement as a cop out."
