Is it normal to get your own back on your mother in law?

The first time I met my future mother in law she asked me, "Does my nail varnish match my lipstick?" WTF. I asked my then bf if she was taking the piss as I was not only a tomboy but was finishing a university degree! I had never been asked such a ridiculous question in my whole life. I could've understood if she was a good-looking teenager but not this old hag!

Anyhow things went from bad to worse! He invited me up for Sunday dinner and asked me to take a seat. As soon as I sat down she said to him, "Right you, if you are going to bring her up for dinner, you may give me extra money every week!" My poor bf shoved her into the kitchen to silence her and I asked his sister to get my coat - but she wouldn't. The sad thing was, that none of his family batted an eyelid. this was obviously 'normal' behaviour for her.

Anyhow as time has went on I have matched her insult for insult.
Is that normal?

    i wouldnt waste time fighting with her if it was me and i would not talk about her to boyfriend, it might hurt him

      I think people only fight with their partner coz they are annoyed with themselves for not sticking up for themselves. I've always been able to stick up for myself and would never let an idiot, no matter who they are, insult me!

        i understand what u are saying and i'm glad you dont get walked over, but for me i hate drama and i tend to retreat from it, i spose we're all different

          I think that's what she's banking on.
          These people rely on YOU having good manners so that they can abuse you but give them an inch and they take a mile.

            yes some people are like that, the pearls before swine thing. sometimes you cant win with these folk cause even when they cower from strong types they are only biding their time to attack again, anyhow good luck to op and joybird you both sound strong
