Is it normal to get so angry at people on welfare...

Here in Australia there is a huge amount of people who are too lazy to get a job. Unfortunately, I have personally known a few. I think they are drones on society, complete wastes of space. I get really annoyed at the fact that these people have copious amounts of children purely for the government handouts they'd receive for each child... it sickens me to think of these lazy, pathetic people relying on the rest of the country to work, and therefore fund their slovenly lifestyles. Is it just me who gets irritated by this?

    Something i read today:

The food stamp program, part of the Department of Agriculture, is pleased to be distributing the greatest amount of food stamps ever.

Meanwhile, the Park Service, also part of the Department of Agriculture, asks us to "Please Do Not Feed the Animals" because the animals grow dependent and do not learn to take care of themselves.

Though welfare is more complex than that, It is a valid point.

I think that people should be drug tested when applying for welfare.

I cannot really comment on Australia's ecomomic state as I don't live there so I'd have no right to, but one thing I will say is "I hope you never need this welfare system that you seem so against."
Of course you are entitled to your beliefs but unemployment can strike anyone of us at any time sometimes without warning. "Be nice to those on your way up as you might just meet them on your back down!" xx

good poin, but somw people just simply cant workdue tolack of mobility and such. soi think you should actually nderstand peoples situation first. like for example a lady i know seems to look just fine but she can not work because she has cancer and therfore she is forced to use welfare even though it isnt her fault. she is by no means lazy.

I would agree in a normal economy but jobs are becoming a rare commodity. The way things are developing I predict a new global Great Depression. Especially if the ECB doesn't finally start a massive quantitative easing program fast and it really looks like they won't. So prepare to soon be on welfare too.

We have the EXACT same thing in Britian, but we call it "benifits" we get lazy good for nothings live off the goverment and feed off our own earnt tax money!!
And they breed these little "Shitlings" to get the money!

But we need to bare in mind not everyone takes advantage of this, some do try to find jobs and need that extra help for the time being, I know people who've been on it (until they got jobs).

I'm gona say normal because I agree!
I have a friend who was claiming the dole, looking for work. When he found a job *AT CENTRELINK*, he reported his income and still got paid his dole money wrongly for months.
I get angry at how many people claim welfare because they just can't be bothered getting a job but honestly if the government is making it so easily available to them..why wouldn't they take it?
I think Centrelink is as much to blame as the people themselves. There will always be people who want to take the easy route (and no I am not talking about people who genuinely can't find work or are unable to work) but if it was not so easy to claim maybe they would feel more motivated to find work?

Also - had to add in that what makes me the most sick is people who have kids just to claim the baby bonus. I have met 3 women in the last few months who all had babies just to claim their $5000. When the money stops being handed over, they handed the baby over to Grandma. Shame..

Why would you get mad at people who are in poverty on welfare when that is a simple biproduct of capitalsm? There has to be somebody on the bottom. if you make all those people get jobs they will be your competition. One thing I figured out is that in capitalism there has to be somebody on the bottom but your job is to make sure its not you by outcompeteing the others.

It isn't easy to get a job for most people, and I myself am on student allowance (studying full time).
But I understand what you mean over here, too many times have I been in centerlink and seen people content with their free hand outs rather than being bothered to look for a job and openly bragging about spending it all on drugs..

  • I don't know how employment is in Australia, but I live in USA and it sucks here. Sure there are people who are lazy crack heads who are on welfare and its normal to be angry with them because not only do they bring down the rest of society but they also make people who get welfare because they actually cant find a good job look bad. The job market here is horrible and causes lots of people to be unemployed who would otherwise be productive people who didnt need to depend on welfare. There are also people who have disabilities who have even a harder time getting hired who benifit from welfare because nobody wants to hire them. So it is normal to hate the people who take advantage of welfare but it is there for a reason for those who cant find employment.

If you want any part of the Aussie system that is stupid consider:
Those on unemployment get more money then those who are full time students who are actually working towards being productive future taxpayers...

The people that really gall me in the UK are those who claim benefits but work every day as well. One guy has been doing this for many years, he also gets care allowance for looking after his elderly mother - but he's not there, he's out working. Then he gets rent from a property he owns sent to his mother's name. They can't have this cash in the bank and so have two safes in the house for all the cash!!

  • Haha, also, there are plenty of jobs in Australia at the moment - in fact we have people from overseas filling positions due to the lack of Australian's filling positions =]

  • I know there are genuine cases of people not being able to work or who have been laid off etc, I don't have a problem with them - it's the people who just can't be bothered to get a job which I get annoyed at - why should the hard worker and the government pigyy-back people through life due to their lack of motivation? I just don't get it, grr!

I don't know exactly know how good Australia's government is, but some businesses have layoffs and sometimes people get fired. It can take allot of time for people to get back up on their feet and recover from them. Not everyone using welfare in Australia is a lazy ass. I'm sure some people do take advantage of the system but they are pathetic.

There aren't enough jobs to go around. If someone has to be unemployed, it might as well be someone who enjoys it, rather than someone with a strong work ethic whose unemployment is soul-destroying.

When a country is strong enough again to have full employment, nobody should be unemployed simply for reasons of laziness. However, when a country is that strong, and economies are booming, people are so pleased with their personal wealth that they become a little more generous about the few who are fiddling and turn a blind eye.

It's ironic that we care more at a time when there really aren't jobs for everyone to go to.
