Is it normal to get nervous around white people?

I don't think im racist, but for some reason i always feel incredibly uncomfortable when i am surrounded by white people. It's like I don't even know how to act around them. I am puerto rican and was raised in an area that is mostly populated by african americans and spanish people. The highschool i went to was also 98% black. The thing is i never feel normal around white people and they always think the way i talk is funny because i have an accent.I get really uncomfortable and nervous around white people. Is this normal?

I'm white...I would feel the same way if I was the only white person around. It's sad but it happens

It's because you aren't used to a situation like that. Things that we aren't used to tend to make us uncomfortable.

It's funny i think it's like that for most people when their the only one of their race in a group, even though race doesn't matter

Why did you say white ppl r terrified of ricans?

  • I would feel that way too. I think your paranoid of being in a new surrounding and self conscious being around people of a different race then which you are used too. Hope it gets better for you :)

  • It's because you're not used to it. It feels strange because it's different. I grew up in a small town that was 98% white and the town i'm in is pretty much the same too. If I see a person that looks very different from what i'm used to, it's a little weird at first

everyone feels uncomfortable when they are out of their element. it can be a poor person surrounded by the rich, a cheerleader surrounded by goths...

It's not racist is just being in a place you've hardly been and not knowing how to fit in. Either enjoy your differences and relish in standing out or watch others and try to get use to how they act.

I live in an area of my city that is predominantly Jamaican. It's quite obvious I don't fit in on some cultural levels but it's also obvious that I don't try hard enough. Everyone has been more than nice but it's difficult to feel integrated while feeling acutely that I am a minority. I think it's useful to experience that, though, if only to get an angle of how people who are genuinely in the minority may feel.

It's not racist, and IT IS NORMAL. :) Anyone feels like that when taken out of their comfort zone. You grew up surrounded by people of color, so it is only natural that you would feel uncomfortable around white people as you barely know them as a society. I feel the same way when I go to certain places, even though I grew up in a very diverse place, filled with every color in the rainbow haha. The point is, you have little to no white friends or family members, therefore, why trust them? My advice would be to make friends with white people, and go with them to these places. Over time, you'll feel comfortable enough to go alone and have a good time. :)
