I know we are capable of destroying all life on earth, but I've never thought about our ability to destroy the planet itself.
It's possible that once the greenhouse gases reach a certain point it will trigger a runaway positive feedback loop that would leave the Earth's atmosphere looking much like Venus. Depends on whether you consider that "destroying the earth" or not. Most life would be dead, and certainly humans would be dead.
Well obviously humans can't literally destroy the *whole* Earth; as in, we can't destroy the gigantic lump of rock whizzing through space. I don't think anyone truly believes we can do that. We can certainly destroy a lot of the life that's on Earth right now though, and I don't think anyone can deny we *can* do that.
Technically, we won't "destroy" the Earth, but rather we will change it drastically. What we have done has happened repeatedly in the past (but mostly not via biotic factors). As far as Mother Nature is concerned, if we keep up with what we are doing, we are just going to create a new age in Earth's history. The problem: Humans will go extinct. This is why we are fighting for the environment, so we can ensure our survival.
Good damn! I accidentally hit yes! Slowly but surely, us humans ARE destroying Earth whether you like it or not. At the rate we are going this planet will not be able to proper sustain us for much longer. This is why humans will have to find other habitable planets and terraform others like Mars and Venus. However, there's always the risk the bloody humans will ruin other worlds too. Heavy reform will be needed and negotiations will have to be made if those other planets are already habited by intelligent life.
We have displaced enough nuclear weapons around the world that we have the ability to blow up the Earth 30 times over. So yes, we do have the ability to destroy the Earth.
We have the ability to severely damage the surface of Earth. We don't have the ability to blow it up, even once.
That was my point. Who cares if the entire Earth is obliterated or if it's the surface, it will obviously not be inhabitable which is the point.
You said 'blow up the Earth'. I took that to mean the entire planet, that's what the expression usually means. If, as you say, you mean render the earth virtually uninhabitable (there would probably still be some insects and deep sea organisms alive) then I agree with you.
The earth isn't just a lump of rock, it's alive, hence why it supports life. We don't respect the earth, I don't believe we are ruining it, but it can certainly ruin us.
