Is it normal to get into debates about this site's effectiveness???

IMPORTANT PART LEFT OUT OF TITLE: with myself. I honestly think about this for long periods of time. On one hand it's many people deciding whether or not something fits a norm, which society defines through majority, therefore making the methodology carried out by this site effective. On the other hand it is a group/community of like minded individuals deciding what does and does not classify as normal, which could skew the results. Is it normal to get into in depth arguments like this with myself? Also, feel free to opine regarding the above statements within the comment section.

It's a great site for me. Even if I don't care about what people say, just writing a story here can help me work out my situation. Getting something of your chest is as important as the advice people give about it. Venting is my primary use for this site, in comments and in stories and poll. For that alone, it is effective.

As for deciding what is "normal", I agree with the OP here. I often wonder about the same thing. Most people here are not what society would call "normal", so it is a bit tough to judge what is normal or not based on us.

  • My only problem with the site is that we're all less than normal people reinforcing each other's false notions on what's normal.

It’s like people who are half blind asking each other for tips on painting. They’re never gonna get anywhere unless someone with full eye sight comes along and helps them and that’ll never happen because people like that have no incentive to join this site (aka normal people).

  • It's not supposed to be taken all that seriously. If you have a real problem that's a serious concern to your life, get professional help.

It depends what you see the site as. If it's as a community, I think it works well. If it's as a platform to ask an anonymous question and get an (admittedly skewed) set of answers, I think it also works well. If it's for personal entertainment, I think it works there too. If it's a chance to get on your soapbox and preach your personal views of the world (I guess this would mean me), then it works for that also. If it's to receive advice from people who've been through similar experience, it ticks that box.

But if it's to receive immutable truths about the way things are, then no. Opinion is just opinion. I'm always interested to hear people's opinion but I wouldn't stake my life on it.

I don't really vote because I'm NOT normal.

  • I always wondered it. Because it's a site, is it only the opinions of people who use the Internet? Just an example. And if so, what if there are difference in opinions between people who are attracted to such sites versus those that are not? Etc etc.

I like to read other people's views hoping to find something I hadn't thought of.
