Is it normal to get hay fever this often?

So apparently when I was born, the doctor told me I'd have a lot of allergies. Possibly asthma, but that hasn't happened yet. I'm also lactose-intollerant, and sometimes these side effects happen as a result of drinking milk.

I have really bad sinuses though, and sneezing fits. This will usually happen every time I wake up, for an hour or longer and tends to get worse during changes in temperature or different seasons... but it's hard to tell really, because I get it so often. It sometimes happens repeatedly throughout the day. I'll just keep sneezing, runny nose, itchy face, etc.

I have had days where I'm sneezing so much, my nose is running, my whole face bloats up, and I get blueish rings under my eyes and itchy/watery eyes. Those episodes can actually last until the next day, and I'm left in bed doing nothing. I have to sleep because I get a heavy head and fatigue associated with it.

I try herbal remedies and allergy tablets, they don't help. I use nasal sprays and eye drops mostly. But it still re-occurs all the time.

Has happened throughout my life... any ideas? I do have three cats in a place that can get very dusty. But regardless, it happens wherever I go.

Anti-histamines are OTC drugs in most countries (no prescription required) so you may have already bought them from pharmacists as a hay fever remedy. However, there are at least thirty different anti-histamines out there and the newer second-generation anti-histamines are more advanced and have fewer side-effects.

It's definitely worth seeing a doctor. The drugs they might prescribe have few side effects (early ones used to make people drowsy, especially if they drank alcohol too, but newer ones don't cross the blood-brain barrier). Also, you don't have to take anything a doctor prescribes, but there may be a non-pharmaceutical solution. I was close to having surgery on my sinuses.

    • My grandmother, or great grandmother had a severe sinus problem too. What does having surgery on the sinuses do? What issues does it prevent, and what is the procedure they did?

I'll be honest, I don't know, because I didn't have the operation in the end. I think they would have punched a hole through to my sinuses and drained the fluid (could be wrong on that, I was only a kid). Not sure it would have done much for my hay fever, but I think it could have helped my sinuses.

Anyway, I'd definitely ask your doctor's advice.

Hayfever means that you are allergic to pollen and/or fungal spores. These are allergens - substances that can cause an allergic reaction. Your allergic reaction happens when your body's immune system mistakes the allergen for a harmful invader. Allergens aren't usually harmful and most people aren't sensitive to them. Zyrtec generic ( http://www.mynetpharma.com/buy-zyrtec.asp ) is the best medicine found in treatment of hay fever problem. This medication is usually taken once a day. During the pollen season, your doctor may advise you to take it every day if you suffer from seasonal allergic rhinitis.

I know how this feels. I've been there with both allergies and repeated bouts of sinusitis to the point where I couldn't see and could barely breathe one afternoon.

Unlike you, my allergies were quite specific and so partially avoidable and were really only at their worst for two months a year. Also, anti-histamines did help to an extent.

Yours sounds so debilitating that I'd consider seeing a doctor about it as soon as you can.
