Is it normal to get depressed after a trip to deviantart?

i draw a bit, i enjoy doing it. i upload my work to deviantart. when i just browse some of the stuff on there i get depressed because my work absolutely sucks compared to it. maybe it's because i had a bad experience on the site. i had 10 comments that all said my work was crap.

what do you think?

Deviantart is a shitty place to get decent feedback or even comments and it has nothing to do with your art. I 've seen pretty good pieces of art that got only like 3 comments and 2 favourites. So that means nothing. If you just want pageviews and favourites try some Disney princesses or fanart animu shit.

Yes, but you can actually get paid to do artworks, known as commissions, so at least that pays off :)
I know someone who actually paid $45 for a small TinkerBell drawing.

    I get jealous, too.
Deviantart is an evil place based on popularity.

Ugh, I know how you feel. I'm not that great of an artist compared to people like Fredo.

But here's something interesting that will make you better then 99 percent of D.A.

Come up with your own stuff! It doesn't matter how crappily drawn it is, just come up with your own stuff. If everyone draws the same thing, one is bound to be better than the other, right? But if you're the only person that can draw a certain thing, then you'll be the best at it.

    For instance:

Of course they're monkeys, but they're monkeys no one else has ever drawn. (I hope).

I love this tip! There's so much effort wasted by weeaboos on DA to create these incredibly executed drawings featuring two of their favorite male characters from their favorite shitty anime entwined around each other. And then there's the wolf & dragon section of DA...and then the pseudo-porn nude shot section of DA...

all stuff that has been done. extension of DavidD's tip: don't draw anime. at all. it's not impressive anymore, miyazaki & amane went there and came back with all the jewels and all that's left seem to be monkeys and tits.

people on deviantart are much, MUCH ruder than the folks at Elfwood.com, but they have a almost interview type process to join the site but the questions are kinda common sense-ish. you have talent, love your sonic, but then again i love sonic, Link the whole zelda thing, never got into it, never played one those games actually...wow?...anyways but yeah ones good too. :P

  • No matter what, don't give up on what you love to do. My drawings used to be called crap and you know what? I kept going. I kept on trying and now Im alot better than most people at my school. Im not trying to sound full of myself im just saying dont give up. We all have to start somewhere. and generally, our first attempts are bad. Just keep going. If you truly love art then keep trying. It WILL pay off in the end. Trust me :)

  • I know how you feel but try your best not to let it get you down. People will always have something negative to say sadly and I can't see your because my computer is being an asshole (*takes deep breath*) but I'm sure you're work isn't that bad. I know for a fact that some people like your work. People are more willing to post something negative than positive. Also, I'm trying to learn not to compare myself to others - you should too. You shouldn't because you're not trying to follow their path - you want to start a league of your own.

  • I like your pictures. Maybe I should show you real crappy drawings I've made. I'm sure you'll feel way better about your skills :)

People are always going to say negative stuff when they should just keep it to themselves. But of course, putting someone down to feel better is always been the way of the weak. Keep drawing because you like drawing, don't listen to the people who bring you down.

Yes, and my art is not as good as PixieCold's artwork or carrot-milk's artwork (2 very talented people), but I still like to draw, and I'm still 20 so I am hoping to improve.
But the terrible stuff is watchers. I mean, people actually judge you if you don't have much llamas or watchers, and they kinda don't care about you, and they even think they don't have to reply to your messages because they think you're a "newbie". I absolutely despise that =|

I know how you feel. I worked for a long time on this on this one drawing, and not once has anyone given me any feedback to help me make it better.

I just wish someone would even tell me it's crap, which I know it is. I'm going to remake that picture soon.

You always need to remember before going on that site that people are usually self centered or just plain trolls. Just seek advice from more talented artists on their.

I completely understand how you feel. I always feel like I can't measure up to other artists. But I don't do art to please others - I do it to please myself.

Anyway, your drawings are pretty good. I like the background in the first one, Link's face in the second one and the shading in both of them. Keep practicing and don't ever give up!
