Is it normal to get annoyed at people that are mainstream?

Maybe not mainstream is the cause, but people that I think can't live for their own and that are obsessed with the flow of things.

When it comes to music, artist, clothing and behaviour and stuff like that I feel like getting sick of people for not being independent of themselves. It annoys me to see people talking about for example an artist that they like, but they never knew anything about, if not everyone was listening to the same as him/her (Skrillex as an example)!

For example, that KONY 2012 video that happened a while ago, it got viral and popular and first thing in my mind was how I hated how everyone 'cared' in a way because they all had 'shared' the news. When actually just 5% of the people that care know how to point out on a map where Uganda is located.

I have no problems with people doing stuff that I like and what I think is quality stuff, especially if it's not that popular to do. For example, in my hometown people don't wear Street-wear clothes a lot and I love the style because it's cool. So I think it's cool to be part of a small group that actually have good taste in something!

I think I'm acting extremely selfish while being a hipster saying this. But I don't go outside in public, flaming on people's lives either. At worst I do secret subliminal messaging where I point out stuff in life that I think is completely obsessed by mainstream. With for example an image or something similar.

I have a girlfriend and she watches Jersey Shore, buys new fashion clothes almost everyday, listens to David Guetta, AVICII, Adam Lambert, Lady Gaga and other simple beats with sex lines mainstream music. It kinda sickens me and I don't really want to be like this, I want to change myself and learn to accept everyone as they are (for real).

Is it normal that I get annoyed by people following mainstream and that It just makes me feel sick sometimes? Please leave a comment below I'll be happy to read it! Thanks for taking your time reading this if you are!

What's with those words? I have the right to feel how I feel why do I feel like your getting mad brah? Because you don't realize that people think this way? Even tho I clearly said that I want to change myself to be a person to accept everyone?

        • Lol you yourself said you're a hipster brah. I just think it's lame to like things because they aren't mainstream it's just as bad as liking things because they are.

I like some mainstream stuff. Not because it's mainstream but because I like it.

I like some obscure stuff. Not because it's hipster but because I like it.

The point I'm trying to make is, you shouldn't "like" something because it's popular or not popular, you should like it because you think it's interesting, sounds great, or intrigues you.

People who try way to hard to be hipsters are just posers.

Well I do think a lot like you at the same time, but I didn't bring it out so well in this post! Thank you for clearing things up for me! But for some reason I can't seem to like what others like because somewhere in my past I wasn't accepted to that group that would let me do all the cool stuff, both mentally not ready to go "public" but also "not welcome" to the wider community.

Have you ever considered that things are popular for a REASON? Like, maybe a lot of people like things because they get more exposure... BECAUSE more people like them? Don't hate people for disagreeing with you. You can listen to all the obscure music you want, buy all the 'least conformist' clothes and read all the most underground magazines you want, but all it will make you is diffrent. JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE.

I swear, its people like you that make me ashamed of admitting that my favorite musical genre is post-rock. You give us a bad name.

I have that with biffy clyro. Infinity land was quite an experimental and challenging album. Their last 2 have been radio friendly arena rock

YES FINALLY!!! SOMEBODY UNDERSTANDS!!!!! You spoke my mind, dude. It's so nice to know there's people out there who feel the same way, I legit thought I was the last anti-mainstream-anti-crowd-follower out there :)

I'm laughing at all the hate you are getting here. But yeah i completely understand your point and i think it's normal. What annoy me the most is when something is utterly stupid and everyone likes it just because everyone does. When everyone dress the same and listen to the same music it doesn't feel honest to me. I don't want to be hipster at all i just love what my own things and i find it hard to believe that everyone like the same things for real...there must be some of them doing it to be ''in''.(Doesn't mean its all of them tho)

Skrillex >< most of them don't even know who he is and what he was before ...and its so funny when they find out he was one of the biggest emo back in the days and they all hated hes band.

So basically, you don't like people who don't like the same things as you?

    Pleaseant.

I detest people who don't think for themselves and let "society" dictate their choices. I've never flowed trends, whether they be fashion or music. You sound very judgemental. Not every artist that's "mainstream" is bad or sucks. Lady Gaga is famous the world over, but you don't see her becoming a sheep to the next "trend". Unlike most "mainstream" music her stuff actually sounds good, she writes her songs instead of hiring someone for her, & she doesn't use autotune. Think about how many musicians go the authentic way, sadly not many today. Look at art. Bansky has become a global icon. Do you think he's sold out because he's a legend? Same thing with Wharhol or Pollock. There are many holes in this mentality. I hate what society has become, but that doesn't mean that everyone is a mindless sheep. Baa!

None of this matters. What other people like should be of absolutely no concern to us. And when it stops being, you tend to find life a little more bearable.

You think you're so cool because you're "hipster", you realize that you're not all that unique and special... seeing as there are so many other people conforming to the "hipster" trend. I like a bit of everything, as do most people. You're an arrogant twat.

Dude, you are as just as unique and special as I am and like every other breathing human out there. But I get the feeling that you take this personal, why the harsh words?

I used to be like u then I had no choice but to get exposed to a lot of rap and jersy shore now I like it. I understand how u feel about music. But clothes come on people's clothing bothers you that is so shallow and pretentious I am extremely judgmental but would never not be friends with someone because the way they dressed outside of them wearing a swastika necklace. Your a self proclaimed hipster so you might pride yourself on your pretentiousness but there are few qualities more off putting then this one

I see what you mean by not liking it when people follow the mainstream. &There are definately alot of people that just blindly jump on a bandwagon without knowing exactely what it stands for. but not ALL people support these popular fads just because they are popular. Some genuinly care and have reason for why they support whatever artist, type of music, cause etc. So dont pass up supporting something JUST because you see other people doing it..but dont support it for that reason either. Everyone has their own opinions, styles, taste, whatever it is. Some people just seem to "go with what everyone else is doing" more than others.

Whoah, whoah, whoah. First off, I have no idea what you are talking about in the third paragraph (so it's not like "everyone" is like that). Secondly, you don't need to "know" an artist to like their music. Thirdly, you're judging a book by it's cover. Even worse, you're saying that people who don't like what you're into aren't "independent". Finally, how can you have a girlfriend who somewhat "sickens" you? Isn't that condradictory?

If you want to change, then keep an open mind and stop judging people so shallowly. Also, maybe you should try appretiating things that are popular, you might find that you actually like some things that a large group of people like, too.

I had problems in my past where people wouldn't accept me in there group (because I wasn't a normal person) and that made me even a less-normal person. If people learned to accept me before I annoyed me at stuff like mainstream things probably would had changed for me. Maybe it's because the mainstream types wouldn't accept a new guy like me that wasn't following from the beginning?

You must be talking about high school or middle school. I don't have any friends that legitimately give a shit what kind of music I like, and we probably don't like the same stuff anyway. The last time I dealt with that issue was... in high school and middle school.
