Is it normal to get a metallic taste in your mouth when you see images of death? Until I was 13/14 when ever I saw death, especially gorey murder I'd always get this strange metal taste and sometimes smell.it went away once the image had gone.I thought nothing of it really until a few months ago I heard that that was a symptom of mental illness! I was a bit of a dick growing up but I was no kip kinkle!

    It's adrenaline.

Humans normally exist in homeostasis. When we feel threatened, often when we are put into a situation where we have a problem coping, there is a general discharge of the sympathetic nervous system, dumping epinephrine (also known as adrenaline) into our system.

Epinephrine is a hormone and a neurotransmitter and when it hits it increases heart rate, constricts blood vessels, dilates air passages and is indicated as a metallic taste in the mouth.

Your sympathetic responses kick into gear if you stumble on a dead body, not a picture of a dead body. A picture will startle you for about half a second, until you realize your not in danger. Assuming that one didn't actively seek out a jeffery dahmer crime scene photo. When I was a kid, I went on rotten.com a few times and every time I got a super adrenaline rush that certainly did not end when I ran away from the computer to escape a gruesome photo.

Blood tastes metallic. You might well be heir to the throne of Death himself. You clearly are able to literally taste the death. Quite a feat, I'd say.

oh, the wonders of the nervous system. It is not a symptom of mental disease. It is not a byproduct of adrenaline. It could just be an associative response. Like a certain perfume reminding you of a memory or person.
