Is it normal to force yourself not to go to the toilet?

When I moved into my flat, in which I live with ten other people, I was really shy about going to the toilet, as I had never met them before. Even though I've been living with them for eight months and am now totally comfortable, I am in the habit of feeling a poo coming and not letting myself go and get rid of it, sometimes for several hours at a time. The same with urinating - I hold it until I'm nearly bursting, and then some. Is this normal?

It's normal to be shy but holding it in for too long can cause some serious health effects. If you can afford it, you could try seeing a therapist to see if they can help ease your embarrassment enough so that you are comfortable enough to go in your own home.

since there are so many of you living together, why not observe how everyone acts when someone else is in the bathroom. if nothing happens, then you can be somewhat sure that when you go in, no one notices either.
