Is it normal to find human remains...?

Okay, so I was parked near a cemetery yesterday waiting for my friends, because there is a nature trail near there that we always hike. Well, on the ground next to my car, I found bones in the dirt. They were all connected and it appeared to be part of a human foot. (What I believe to be the 2nd,3rd and 4th metatarsals)

At first I thought maybe an animal had dug up a grave and left it there. Then I remembered there are old graves from the early 1900's that may have washed out due to the rain. But I explored the cemetery and there were no graves disturbed or additional bones I could find. There even appears to be slight cartilage still present which is whats keeping the bones together. I live in a small, secluded community where murder and crime never happen so I'm kind of concerned about this. I don't know if bringing it to the cops will do anything, because I found it near a graveyard so they'd probably just laugh at me.

Basically, I took the bones home with me and am now trying to decide what to do with them. I'll try and include a picture of the bones on top of my foot for comparison and if it doesn't work, I'll try and post links to them. What do you guys think?

I know, its random as hell. I mean, I get that this is a fucked up post and all, but obviously this rubbed someone the wrong way...someone with way too much damn time and fake accounts on their hands

Mine was removed simply because I thought people who particpate(d) in war should be charged for war crimes. Freedom of speech is dead on IIN.

Wow, that's fucked up. Why would they remove that? I've read so much worse shit on here that's allowed to stay posted.

Um...yeah. You should definitely call the police. I sincerely hope you didn't disturb a crime scene.

Definitely not a crime scene. I come to this location frequently. I'm honestly thinking an animal has found a body somewhere in the woods and this is a piece they drug out. My sis used to be a cop and is looking into it for me for now.

Idk...I've read your comments before, and I know your a smart cookie, but think about it...if bodies are being buried properly, they're way way buried. Enough were there's no decomp odor, so it's totally implausible that the grave was disturbed by an animal.

Even if it's not a murder or something like that (which btw, no one thinks could happen near them...because it just seems so implausible. It does happen however). It could be that the funeral home isn't dealing with the bodies properly. There's tons of cases of funeral homes reselling graves and stacking bodies, which is also illegal.

And yeah, I get it. Bones are cool, but those bones belonged to another human being, with family members, who was loved and important. I don't believe in afterlife, or give two shits about what happens to my body after I die, but if somebody I loved, like my dad or my bother passed away.....idk the idea of someone taking home their foot to decorate their house would upset me so much...there's no words.

I know people sometimes don't want to bug the cops for no reason, but I definitely think this is a situation that would be worth calling over.

Hahaha. They have to go on like 4 different accounts to do that. It always makes me laugh when people snap and go aggro on the site.

Anywho- good luck with your bones! I'm hoping it's not anything too creepy or dramatic, and that would be pretty badass if they were from the 1800s...I'm kinda curious now. You'll have to update. A good mystery is always cool. Knowing me, I'd be at the graveyard at 1am with a flashlight, scaring the shot out of myself telling those stories : )

So the bones were examined by a forensic anthropologist from a local university and she has stated they belong to a seal, even though she said they are quite thick for seal bones. She thinks a seagull or a bird must have dropped them in the graveyard while flying over it. Totally disappointed it's not human, but that's probably for the better.

Wow, thats just sad haha. But I'll definitely update here after I bring the bones to the police. Thanks for your input! I'm also the kind of girl that goes on random walks through the cemetery in the middle of the night so this will be well within my comfort zone haha

Points well taken, and understood. There are some very old grave sites deep in the woods on this island that I live on, that are dated as far back as 1840, so that's why I'm kind of mulling it over and thinking it could have come from one of them. However, I understand the unlikelihood of this.

You're entirely right though. I will probably end up turning this over to the authorities, but I'm going back to the cemetery tonight to search the area further for any more evidence. Currently a vet pathologist is looking over the pictures I took and is gonna get back to me on whether it belongs to a human or animal.

Why would you pick up bones and take them home? Gross. Tell the cops.

If you want to see bones go to a museum.

Stealing remains of someone's loved one isn't cool.
Neither is messing with a possible crime scene or tampering with possible evidence.

I didn't steal anything. It's not like they were on, in or near a grave site. I wasn't even sure they were human when I took them.

You said they appeared to be a human foot. If they are human remains and you aren't dead, then they aren't yours.

They belong to a seal apparently. Had a forensic anthropologist check them out.

Bear paw and foot bones look similar to humans.

They can sometimes look similar, but there are no bears on the island where I live. The only one that's ever been spotted here was a black bear and was shot back in 2012.
