Is it normal to feel that lyrics ruin most music?

The only genres I really like are techno and classical, mainly classical.

I like music because it makes me /feel/ things. If an orchestra plays a certain piece, you'll feel sad, and if they play another, you could even feel scared.
But the mainstream music everyone listens to these days focuses on these silly words, the lyrics... they ruin it all. They're a crutch. If you have to tell me a sad story to move me, then you should be an author, not a musician. The attempt rarely even works, it just sounds like bad poetry clogging up the music.

This doesn't apply to an awesome choir in the background singing 'ooh' or well-picked Latin words. They're just another instrument... that's what the voice should be, an instrument. Who agrees? Is it normal?

The voice is an instrument yes, but at first it was used in song to tell tales of virtue and might...now it's changed but it has the same basic meaning..telling a story, or something of importance to the writer, something they think others will connect so there people can group and feel accepted. what do you talk for? to tell people things, there's not that much of a difference between talking and singing...it's just more powerful and speaks over an audience like an anouncment, showing the world what THEY feel like and how THEY want to do it the music just helps out the singer, and before you say something about me not knowing anything about symphonic music....i've played several instruments for several symphonies, orchostras, and basic bands. so.... i disagree.

Not all good pieces of music with lyrics are pop crap.

I feel very much the same way. You are normal. Sing-a-long nursery diddies are just that and some people prefer the comforting thought-programming lyrics with elementary music elements in those pop nursery diddies (pop nursery diddies can encompass any genre by the way, from rap, rock, r&b etc).

I believe it is an individual's natural preference. Often the ones that need a good "karaoke jam" will be completely intolerant of classical, jazz, and all electronic genres. The lyrics in operas and the like are all performed with the music as a tool for the music, voice samples in electronic music are instruments like every other sample (people really have a hard time understanding that one, they actually believe there is a repetitive "song" going on).

To sum it up, some of us enjoy an emotional and or intellectual connection with sounds and sound structures ordered in time and appreciate it for what it is (instrumentally-minded). Others (a "majority," hence pop music) don't get much out of that, to them the ears are there to understand speech and identify dangers, etc., they don't really process the auditory information in the same way. They still enjoy things like rhythm and understand melodies if accompanied by lyrics. They will take to karaoke.

Please note that I'm not trying to talk down all the pop genres and singy-songs, I'm just laying out my hypothesis that folks enjoy music in naturally very very different ways.

Even if I hear music with lyrics that I enjoy, I rarely remember the words themselves. I remember the sounds. I could never take to karaoke because the words don't stick with me, only the instrumentation. And yes, it is rare for the words themselves to be good poetry. I will agree that there are certain specimens of music and lyrics that are very well crafted and meaningful, but it is rare.

I like the lyrics. Maybe it's just me but the lyrics of a song can really effect me. They can make me smile or cry. They're relatable to most people. But it's cool that you relate to the instrument and get feeling from that instead.

It sounds like you are just a fan of instrumental or electronic music. Nothing wrong with that. However, there is also nothing wrong with other people liking and getting that same emotional movement out of music with lyrics.

I am a trance producer and dj also, so I deal with all types of electronic music. I am not sure what you have been exposed to, but not all electronica is without lyrics. Much of the genres include lyrics or melodic vocals; alot of euro progressive trance, house, and happy hardcore focus themselves around vocals actually.

Just like what you like, but dont judge others for theirs. Be tolerant of differences.
