Is it normal to feel that cutting yourself is the only way to cope?

i dont know, ive tried others ways, they dont work.. people keep telling me to "stop hurting myself", but i don't understand because if it keeps me safe and alive then surely that isnt hurting myself?

I cut myself for years and I can honestly say that I would not be alive today without it. It provided a relief that I couldn't find anywhere else, and without that relief I would definitely have killed myself. Most people will tell you to fight the urge at all costs, but that can be even more dangerous than cutting. I have to admit that cutting yourself on a regular basis is not an ideal situation, but if you truly need to do it in order to get through the day then don't let anyone make you feel like you're doing something wrong. Circumstances change. Eventually you won't need this anymore. In the meantime you do what you have to do. Good luck.

It must not be the only way to cope, because I used to do it and then I stopped permanently. You can quit this, and you should. It doesn't fix anything at all.

What worked for me was falling in love, visiting my nearest slum--skid row, and realizing that by cutting myself I was being complacent. I wasn't willing to work harder for a better kind if happiness or contentment.

I highly recommend visiting your nearest slum. There, you realize what struggle actually is.

cutting yourself just isn't safe.and it's a VERY bad habit that should be stopped immediately. And I totally understand why some people do it, it's just something that could potentially harm you. I mean I've never been in a situation that I felt that terrible in. But I do suffer from depression and anxiety, and I never felt the need to cut myself. But I have met people that have. But if I honestly could give you advise. I would just tell you that your not going to be in the situation that your in forever. And that life is worth living. Just keep on going through life. You don't know whats going to happen next.

It is a widely-used technique to deal with stress, but it would be better if you replaced it with something safer. Hepatitis and other infections are no joke. Plus, all the scrutiny and questions can create a stress cycle, where you cut to escape the stress from hiding your cutting.

I think you should quit while you're ahead.
the next cut is never the last.
and the last one WILL be the deepest.
wait till it gets to the point that you have to go to the hospital. explain THAT without being embarrassed. you in one room going "uhhh i cut myself" and some other unfortunate fellow in the other room with no arms to cut himself with.
paint, type, play games, play guitar, piano. anything that keeps your hands busy. after cutting cold turkey for 3 weeks you'll see its not that hard.
plus, remember youll have to explain that to your employer. and youll look back on those scars when youre like 40. explain THAT to your kids when YOU have to be the strong one.
