Is it normal to feel stupid after what happened to me?

PLEASE READ
I'll try to make this as short as possible, but it'll be hard. It's not a boring story though, so hopefully you won't mind.

I was at a store the other day and there wasn't too many people there and this woman came up to me on the verge of tears. She looked really serious and upset about something, so I instantly went into sympathetic mode.

She told me that she got a serious phone call that her son was in the hospital and she needed to go there as soon as possible. She then told me that there was a taxi waiting outside for her and she even pointed to the taxi which was parked, waiting outside the building. She said "I wouldn't usually do this, but I'm $8.00 short for the taxi. I would greatly, greatly appreciate it if you'd lend it to me." I was hesitant in giving in to her request, but I decided to just go ahead and give her the money. She then asked me for my phone number so that she could call me and let me know when she would be nearby to meet me here and give me back the $8.00, so I went ahead and gave her my cell. She then proceeded out of the store, walked over to the taxi, stood very, very close to it and even spoke to the taxi driver for about 20 seconds, but then...she walked away quicker and quicker until she was a mere dot in the distance. This is when I realized she was most definitely a con artist. 5 minutes after she left, a couple got into the taxi, so it obviously wasn't for her.

Was it wrong of me to have given her the money? Would you have felt obligated to give it to her or would you have just walked away? The look in her eyes was just so very serious and upsetting to me that I honestly couldn't hold myself from giving her the money. I was thinking maybe I should just pretend I have no cash with me..but I was too caught up in the moment that I didn't say it. Plus, if she was serious, I didn't want to be mean to her.

What are your thoughts on this? Am I stupid? I definitely feel stupid about this entire incident, but then part of me keeps saying, "the story was so good and seemed legit with the taxi out there and everything."

---------------------------------
OTHER DETAILS:
I told a friend of mine and they think it's very possible that she walked over to the taxi station which was an 8 minute walk away, but then, why did she point to that taxi?

The hospital she was referring to was about an hour walk away maybe even more and there are no side walks half way to that hospital.

The woman also said she'd leave her license with me to prove that she would come back and she reached into her pocket almost like she was going to give it to me. I reached for money in my bag and she never mentioned the license after that, so I don't know what that was about? What if I had asked for it? What would she do? Give it to me? I doubt she even had one, so I didn't understand that.

Plus, how did she know the taxi would still be there while she was talking to me? She talked to me for a good 4-5 minutes!

It could have been a mistake. Maby she thoguht that the taxi was hers but the talk she had with the driver was to find out it wasnt. Since the taxi place wasnt far, if your son was in the hospital then running to the place to get one wouldnt be farfetched. If she was a conartist? She wasnt a very good one. Most conartists use there time to get way more than 8 bucks. She was only looking for taxi money, thats for sure. If she wanted food she could have done it in a much simpler way, with better food than what you can get for $8. Either way. It's a small amount of cash. Just think that you did her a faver, a good deed. Worrieing over it is pointless.

I was conned in Chicago right before I was leaving the city. He said he needed money for the bus and he'd give me change in exchage. It was only 2$ and I thought he was going to give me change for it(he reached into his wallet like he was going to give me change) but instead he took the money and walked really fast away. Oh well. I felt stupid but I don't care.. I just hope he didn't use it for drugs

I would have done it too probably, i mean if it was only 8 dollars it was worth trying to be nice, my thought is...you put that 8 dollars in your karma jar & if she did lie thats been deducted from hers. dont feel bad, karma will get her in the end if she lied. either way it shows your a good person, so you sould be okay with that (:

don't feel stupid. it's hard to say what i'd do in that situation. i mean, it was only $8, so if i even half-believed her i probably would have given it to her. she might have conned you, but it sounds like she was decent at it.

i don't trust anyone unconditionally. i trust people with the type of things i feel they are trustworthy with. the key to dealing with strangers is to only trust them with something you are willing to lose. $8 isn't a lot in the grand scheme of things. a lot of really smart people get conned out of a hell of a lot more all the time, so don't worry about it.

don't feel stupid. you did the right thing with the information you had at the time. you didn't know it was bs so there's nothing to feel stupid about. how people con others like that...well, they are the one's with the problem - not you.

Don't feel stupid, that sort of thing can happen to anyone. If anything, you should feel good about yourself, because you are obviously a kind person with a good heart. It's hard that the nice, kind people are the ones that will be taken advantage of in life. But next time you'll be a little more wary and that's good, because one should always be on their toes. But don't get yourself too down about it.

cons are such good actors, aren't they?

$8 is a bargain for a lesson well learned.

i was conned by a guy that was in his late 80s, who is not a citizen of my country. to make another long story as short as i can, besides myself, my family, other locals, the local newspaper (a pulitzer prize winner), the state police, the mayor of the city, and the governor of the state, we all got taken in. this thing had a life of it's own and grew like crazy.

after this old man got back to his home country, his adult son sent me a letter, thanking me and telling me his father said the citizens of my country loved him so much, that he came home with all his money! that old man told me he didn't bring enough money and couldn't take care of himself.

it never upset me though, i got a good laugh when i recieved the letter from the son. i thought, that little shit!!!!! makes me smile just remembering it. maybe my reaction is because he was so old and little and cute. who knows, i'm smiling just thinking about it.

mate you've obviously been conned! it's totally normal to feel stupid after it, don't worry.

this kind of thing happened to me. twice. with the SAME conman... he tried to feed me some story about his wife being in a hospital in the next city coz she was giving birth and he needed to reach her but he got mugged so lost his wallet etc n he was asking for money to get a taxi there. but he forgot that i'd already heard the story before a few days later (i believed him the first time but only gave him £1) and just told him to piss off.

anything like that happen to you again be very very wary. offer to get the police for them next time a person comes up to you "in trouble" and see what they say next!
