Is it normal to feel shy around people?

I'm 18, and I feel shy around people I don't talk to...I'm going to college this year, and I was wondering if it was normal. Like, I talk to my family and friends, and every now and then I make new friends, but I'm just not outgoing. I guess I'm more of an introvert than an extrovert? I feel most relaxed listening to music in my room, by myself, or reading a book. Is that normal?

I'm shy around new people but after I'm familiar with them I'm very outgoing. So I sorta know what you mean. Don't worry about it, just be yourself.

you`re not the problem dear. it`s just sometimes what people talk about doens`t interets you, so you rather be quiet than get urself in something that ur not into it, i`m pretty much like you. also with your friends and family your more outgoing bcuz those ppl understands you, but others who don`t know you might not have the courage to talk to the quiet girl but when they do hear her voice or her oppinion they always find her an interesting person :)

Wow you're just like me... except for that book reading part. People keep telling me to just move on. Sometimes I can be too hard on myself and be like: "Wow what was i thinking", "How could I be such an idiot", etc. When really we're all just humans, we all make mistakes. We just can't feel bad about them.
