Is it normal to feel sad when friends joke around with you?

I know they're joking, and I joke with them too, but when my friends make a joke about me, or fool around with me(like make fun of me for being so proper or for listening to Radiohead) I feel legitimately sad. Especially when my girlfriend does it. I'll call her a dummy or short or tease her when her hair is messed up, and she knows I'm joking and laughs along. But when she calls me feminine or nerdy or teases me when I try to sing, it hurts my feelings. I realized it made me a hypocrite for doing that, so I stopped messing with them, but they keep doing it to me. When I say it hurts my feelings, I feel like a jerk, because I know they're just playing. So, am I overly sensitive? Or is it normal?

How you feel is how you feel and if your girlfriend makes you upset then there is an issue. If your friends don't like radiohead, they're not cool anyway.

    • I think so too. But, she has been making an attempt to stop it, and I'm really glad about that. It's sort of a habit fr her, and I don't blame her. I think just the knowledge that she doesn't mean any of it and is willing to stop is so gratifying to me. And, haha, true that!

I think you may be afraid that their jokes are meaningful disapprovals of you. They are not. Real friends love you, flaws and all.

    PS: radiohead is crack.

    • I think that might be what it is. I'm afraid sometimes that they really mean it. But, I guess I do need to realize that they are my friends, and very good friends at that.

      Thanks for the help! :)

I get the same thing man... If you just can't find the strength to just accept it as a joke then the one thing to do is talk to them seriously one at a time from the ones that bother you the most to the ones that bother you the least.

Also, if you're like me and sort of a "happy" and "jokey" teen and people don't really know the real side of you then it can be especially difficult to get people to be serious back to you.

But it is VERY possible and will help you.

    • Yeah, I've been trying to do this, and so far, it hasn't really been working. But, I won't give up!

Friendship is magic. Maybe realize that they aren't trying to hurt your feelings.

They are your friends and don't mean to hurt you - so don't take offence.
