Is it normal to feel sad for old people?

When I see older people in restaurants or other public places and they're all alone, i feel so bad for them. I want to give them a hug, or something like that. They just sit there, keeping to themselves. Not talking to anyone. And it makes me so disappointed. Is this normal?

As a child I always felt sorry for old people, but that was because when you're a child you don't think of adults as older versions of you, they're an entirely different species.

Now I simply see someone who's still here, and don't feel sad. Instead I think, "lucky you" :)

I do that too. They just always seem so depressed. Fortunately, though, all of the elderly I've met turn out to be happy and bright people, so I suppose that's not true of all of them.

I love old people! Well most of them anyway. I feel sad for them too but then I think of how it must be to have lived thru so much. The depression, world wars, all the technological advances, seeing the progression of things like vehicles and all that. I wonder what the first phone they ever used looked like and the fact that they used an ice box and when they first saw tv. They probably miss they way things were. I deal with a lot of oldies and they are so sweet

Old people (those twice or three times your age) are not what they appear to be. Take you for instance. Say your 20 years old (in college). You've experienced twice as many things as a 10 year old, but you wouldn't say you are only twice as wise would you?
No you would say you are many times smarter than a 10 year old, because wisdom doesn't increase linearly. Instead it increases greatly with specific experiences.
Learning to read for example may have opened many door
Learning the way of the internet
    Learning to walk
    Learning that you like sex
learning that you can get the opposite sex to do what you want
    Having kids
    Aging
    Living through disasters, death,
Seeing patterns in people, places, and events

ALL these things and many more contribute to wisdom and all these things come with the horrible thing called aging.

Thus when you reach a certain wisdom level (I'll call it) and thus a certain age you will look at those who are not nearly as wise as you, and you won't necessarily envy them.

It is more likely that you will see them as less, or stuck, or lost, or something but it won't be, "I wish I had there complexion".

Evolutionarily, youth is for procreation and thus attraction. But so much in this world is greater than "bumping uglies".

I suppose my point is, those old people that you see are not necessarily looking onto you in the way you think they are.
