Is it normal to feel like you're "falling" asleep?

Whenever I start to fall asleep I get this "jolt" that makes me feel like im falling, so my body jumps, involuntarily, and I wake up. Does this happen to everybody and how can I stop this from happening? Or is it just something that can't be controlled.?

A hypnic jerk, hypnagogic jerk, sleep start, or night start, is an involuntary myoclonic twitch which occurs during hypnagogia, just as a person is beginning to fall asleep, often causing them to awaken suddenly for a second. Physically, hypnic jerks resemble the "jump" experienced by a person when startled,[1] often accompanied by a falling sensation.[2] A higher occurrence in people with irregular sleep schedules is reported.[3]

I can't remember the scientific stuff but it is to do with your body thinking you are dying cause everything is relaxing and slowing down faster then your brain. So it 'jolts' you by releasing adrenalin to keep you alive.
    - your not really dying of course, just your body tricking your brain
