Is it normal to feel like i'm dreaming when i'm awake?

Randomly, usually when I'm swimming, I feel like I'm dreaming when I'm awake. I feel disconected and disoriented, exactly like I would feel in a dream but I'm not sleeping. It's actually pretty terrifinging. I can't enjoy myself when this happens because it doesn't feel real. Sometimes, once the feeling leaves and a few hours later, I have to ask myself if what I did even happend! IIN? Does this happen to anyone else? Please help.
I have never done drugs in my life and I'm not currently on any medication, nor have I been when these situations occur.

Ok I can't believe no one has the right answer so far. It's not schizophrenia. People are idiots, haha. It's called disassociation. Everyone does it. Like whenever you go upstairs and totally forgot what you were gonna do for example. But there is a scale for disassociation to measure how intense it is. Some people have it so bad it causes them to almost forget who they are and that causes them to have multiple personalities. It used to be called mpd multiple personality disorder, but it was changed to DID, Disassociative identity disorder. like I said you may not have it bad enough to have multiple personalities but that is very clearly disassociation. Also in response to the comment where they said they had the same problem whenever something tramautic happens, that is 100% normal. Disassociation is a very normal way people cope with tramautic experiences. I would just try to find a psychiatrist and have them do it a disassociation scale questionnaire with you. My sources are my personal experiences, and over 10 years of research. Google it, you may find you have more symptoms than you thought. Good luck

Hi maam. Same feeling here. I think its not normal. Its quite difficult if you were suffering from that feeling. It is very annoying. I started suffering from it since 16 years old, and now Im 21 and I still feel it sometimes. Before, it happens to me every month. But now, maybe after 3 months. I dont know whats the cause and what would be the solution for that :-(

the only time i had this was when i got hit by a car. i thought i was having a nightmare. i was in shock for a couple of hours.

anyways this sounds really unusual, you should see a doctor and schedual an MRI.

I know what you mean and I think it's normal, I would call it more of a de ja vu feeling when it happens to me though.

it's a lot more common than you may think. but there is a medical term for it, it's called "derealization", it's actually a symptom of anxiety. google it to learn more about it. but you're lucky that it only happens to you for short periods of time, because a lot of people deal with this for years at a time. it's almost like watching a movie, nothing feels real. scary stuff.

People with Schizophrenia are constantly like this. So unless your whole life feels like a dream, you're normal.

It happens to a lot of people once in awhile. It happens to me but that doesn't mean I am schizophrenic. There are many more symptoms to the disorder than your life not feeling real.

This is quite common, there is a term for it but I forget. Everyone goes through periods like this at some time. Don't worry, it'll pass quickly

I've had it for thirteen years, it hasn't passed. Sometimes I go through it multiple times a day for long periods of time, it worries me because I don't feel anything when it happens like no emotions whatsoever. Does that mean I'm some kind of sociopath?

this usually only happens to me if something really upsetting has happened to me. it's happened to me a few times in the past during a traumatic time. but you should see a psychologist, because feeling this way is not pleasant.

I'd see a doctor if I was you. This could be an indication of an underlying medical issue.
