Is it normal to feel guilty about buying from thrift stores?

I feel as though I am stealing from poor people who actually rely on thrift stores. A homeless person could be wearing this awesome jacket I got for $5, but instead, they will find him dead in a snowbank tomorrow morning. I am not poor, I am just cheap and unconcerned with fashion. Is this normal?

Thrift stores often use the money made by selling donations to serve the homeless and needy so you're helping them by shopping there actually. Next time you're in your thrift store, ask them what services they provide for homeless and needy and you'll feel better about shopping there. Salvation Army for example provides meals, operates shelters, helps in natural disasters and even provides (brand new) Christmas presents to families that can't afford it-and it is largely made possible through money made from shoppers like you.

Yeah, it's normal to feel guilty. Just try to remember that you're actually HELPING by buying that stuff, they use your money to help the poor.

You are doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING incorrect..These "thrift stores" are open to one and all potential customers..
We here in Canada (and parts of the U S) have a vast chain of thriuft stores, and I do know that a good portion of their sales are turned over to charities, but regardless...
Let me pass this along to you..
I am a long time married crossdresser, and from the aforementioned stores, I have an very extensive female apparel wardrobe, and a BIG portion of it, has been achieved from the above...
I cannot afford to buy retail, and I just don't buy to be buying, I really have to like the article / garment before I purchase it..
I always check the sizes, all buttons on it, proper length (re jackets, blouses, etc) and free of stains, (all items are always precleaned, but nevertheless)
All I've ever purchased have been in excellent and not all that extensively worn - some are brand new - I guess they hung in someones closet, and then they got fed up with it, and it has now found a home.. All at a "fraction" of retail / new.
So go shopping, have fun, good luck, and enjoy your purchase (s)..

People are stupid for not doing this more often. Don't feel guilty. That homeless person needs the donation of a coat winter coat, not just a cheap one.
