Is it normal to feel fat when going through puberty?

I'm looking back at photos of my self before/during/post puberty. I distinctly recall being disgusted with myself at this time. When I was 10, I was 5'1" and weighted 87 lbs. At 11(beginning of puberty), I gained an inch and went to 107 lbs. At 12, I gained another inch and went to 119lbs. 13, 5'3" and 125 lbs. 14, 5'3" and 128 lbs. I recall feeling fat and disgusting, but I was a size 4! is it normal to interpret puberty and being fat? Did anyone not gain a lot of weight during puberty, or have it explained in a way that you didn't feel fat?

Everyboby is different. We have different body types that react differently to hormones being produced at puberty. I grew 2 feet taller but couldn't gain any weight. I was so skinny and lanky. No clothes ever fit me and I got picked on alot. It took a couple years to finally fill out.

Everyones bodies adjust during puberty. Weight increases & fluctuates. 5'3 & 128 is in the normal range. If youre not happy you could work on toning & eating healthier....anywhere from 115-135 is still normal. So IF you wanted, you could lose 10 lbs. But realize thats up to YOU. Youre still 100% fine the way you are now. Also depending on if youre a male or female... Women carry weight differently (boobs, hips, butt) those in MY opinion are good areas to have a lil weight in. More womenly :)

When I turned 13, I was 104 lbs. I haven't changed yet, but I'm unhealthy, so it doesn't matter. I think most people do quickly gain weight during puberty. It sounds normal to me. I shot up from 60 to104 in a small time range, so it's fine.

learning how to use photoshop made me see things so much clearer in the magazines. now, whenever i see an ad or poster or magazine cover, i go over the ways it was photo shopped, out loud to a friend or in my head.
My original question was more along the line of 'did anyone else not understand that you're supposed to gain a lot of weight in puberty along with height?'
I still feel like a huge balloon whenever i'm with someone significantly shorter/thinner than i am-which makes no sense-i have to buy petites, but being the tallest kid in class was not fun in 2, 3, 4, 5. then i was short all of a sudden in 8, but still felt tall+fat. self perception is screwry.

Totally normal! I didn't want my daughter to go thru the same shit I did, not eating, starving myself, so my hubby taught her how to use Photoshop. Helped her see how celebrities looks so great all the time. So far, so good!

  • Puberty is a time when most people especially girls start to question what is going on. Girls get their periods, zits, and gain weight so fast they don't know when it even started. When I started puberty, I thought I was so fat. And the rain thin celbraties sure didn't help. I didn't take it too far though but it is normal for girls going through puberty to think they're fat.

I know! I think I was something like a size 4 and a DD! I hated myself for not being size 0 all over. Buying shirts in large screwed with my head, especially since they were way too big in the waist!

Oh yeah-I'm a woman, and am happy to say I've gained a little weight (but no height) since then. I'm a computer programmer, and being a woman was very awkward since I am very filled out in those areas. I ended up saying "I am a woman, not an idiot. say to me what you would to Steve*" and they stopped behaving like hormonal teenage boys.
