Is it normal to feel disgusted by the mentally disabled?

I don't want to feel this way, I want to respect anyone equally, but whenever I see someone who is obviously mentally handicapped, all I can feel is a mixture of disgust and pity. I think things like "What a waste of a human life", "That's not even like being a real human" and "Their life must be living hell, and they probably can't even tell, which is the saddest part".

Before you spam No, I already know that these feelings are wrong. I mean, I'm gay, I understand being illogically hated due to what you are. I want to know if thinking this is NORMAL. For instance, does anyone else think this?

Also, do you know if there's a good way to train yourself into thinking it less...?

  • Everyone feels this way deep down. Humans were not meant to exist in such a state.

Yeah, I actually feel the exact same way. You know it's bad and you know it's not right to project those feelings onto people. As long as you feel that way and don't verbally or physically express those thoughts- you should be alright. No biggy.

Do you think an eagle looks at humans and pities our inability to fly? Every living thing on this planet works at a different level. If being mentally disabled (compared to you) doesn't make someone unhappy, why should they have to put up with your pity and disgust, which very well may make them unhappy? The problem is with you, not with them. And you should really know better.

I don't think she ever said otherwise.

How can a person "know better" than to feel natural emotions outside of their control? As long as she's not treating anyone badly she's doing fine.

Yes, your reaction is actually centred in biology. People with serious mental retardation are genetically defective, prone to violence and strange looking. Your gut for lack of a better term is telling you to stay away from a poor set of genes and unpredictability. Animals in the wild, kill deformed or useless progeny because their instinct is not over ridden with social guilt. All arguments for keeping such ''people'' alive are usually if not always emotionally, based. Also being gay is not a threat to the gene pool, so any heterosexual person disliking you for that reason is down to conditioning not biology. In fact, heterosexual men should be happy you are gay, it leaves more opportunity for them to acquire better life mates. I know very few women, who are prejudice against gays; because usually they are not sexually threatening. What is most disturbing is the fact that our inherit biology is over written by 20th century do- gooding ideals.

You only feel this way because you're scared that it could have happened to you and you feel vulnerable and insecure and frightened of how not in control you'd be. It also means that you are not living your life to the full right now and that's what deep down bothers you and makes you feel off balance. People who do what they love and throw themselves fully into their careers are happy, confident and accepting of others and do not judge because they radiate love, for themselves and for others. They laugh out loud, they love with all their heart and they are happy to jump out of bed in the morning to face another day. And they are also not afraid to die because they believe in destiny and in the hope that they will complete their life's work before they die and that's all that matters to them.

Unlock who you really are and you will not be scared or judgemental any more. Believe me, you'd be better off.

I think that it is really hard to look at any mentally disabled person and not have some sort of reaction to them. However, I think that you have to look at yourself as a beautiful person and say to your self ' I will exude respect for everyone, including the disabled because I respect myself" YOu should thank your lucky stars that you are more normal than they are so that means that you are more capable of having a better reaction towards them than anything else. Trust me, we are all on this earth for a reason and just because a dog is missing a leg, that doesnt mean its not a dog, I just means that it is a 'special' dog. I'm a waitress and sometimes I see children who are noticeably mentally retarded, but they still have emotions and they are more real than any person that I know, they are not fake at all. I get a really big smile when I see a special kid smiling at me. I think that they are put here for a reason and who knows what that is, but everytime I ask someone how they deal and cope with a family member who is Special, they always say how they have improved themselves, because it takes a really unique and special person to deal with a special person. I think that you have what it takes in you.

"Trust me, we are all on this earth for a reason and just because a dog is missing a leg, that doesnt mean its not a dog, I just means that it is a 'special' dog." First, what is this "reason" you claim we are here? Also, the dog analogy is irrelevant because the subject was retards, not amputees. "they still have emotions and they are more real than any person that I know, they are not fake at all." It depends on the degree of disability. For example, anencephalic children are only born with the brain stem and are essentially a shell incapable of feeling emotions, communicating with others, or being self-reliant.

By "retard haters" do you mean "haters of retards" or "haters who ARE retards?" Or both?

I think it's ok to pity hem but to think they are awaste of a life is going too far. if you're gay, youshould know how horrible it is to be prejudiced and for people to think you are different.

  • I was just thinking this today at school actually :o and I totally understand, I feel like this sometimes.

I think it's perfectly natural to be uneasy around the things we don't see every day, and these feelings arn't bad, it's just your way of dealing with your emotions on these people.

I believe it's better than actually striking out at them physicaly anyway...right?

    :) Demon ~

While it's true that animals kill their own disabled, people should be more advanced than this. When I was a kid there was a family who we knew who had a retarded son and I remember the uncomfortable feelings I had toward him. I remember thinking that there was something wrong with the whole family. Fast forward 20 or so years later and my oldest son was injured at birth and he was diagnosed with severe brain damage. Our phone stopped ringing first off and then a stead distancing of family and friends until now, my husband and me and my son at age 37 plus our three other kids are totally isolated. We don't get invited anywhere, no holidays, no parties, and certainly not weddings. Our neighbors pretend we don't exist and make up stupid reasons why they don't like us. It is very transparent. My point only is this. The families of disabled people are isolated, if you can't handle being with the disabled one don't isolate the entire family. If you're a close family member make a point of having a close relationship with one of the siblings because they have issues always dealing. Be friends with the mom or the dad. But realize this, kids. We, the families of the disabled have much more depth than those of you who do not. Our priorities are in order and we don't really care about stupid shit. But being isolated isn't good for anyone so at least be kind to the family. There's nothing wrong with us. We had stuff to teach you.

I just decided to Google 'are people predisposed to feel revulsion at retarded people', and this link was at the top of the list. I am a fairly progressive person, yet my entire life, I shudder with revulsion whenever I see someone who is obviously retarded. I have always been ashamed of this reaction, however, I do see it as a biological response, i.e. they weaken the herd. I literally cannot look at someone who obviously has Down's Syndrome or who is retarded in other ways. Living on the Left Coast my entire life, I've felt like a total asshole because of this. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one (73% have voted 'yes, it's normal').

    Depends.

If you are a saintly hero in a Hollywood movie, then no, this feeling isn't normal.

If you are an actual human being with emotions and a digestive system, then yes, the revulsion is normal.

My dad feels the same way about mentally disabled people, and he gets really uneasy when he sees people in wheelchairs. He also has some self-confidence issues, so maybe that's something you should think about.

Saying "it's okay for me to feel this way because I'm gay" doesn't make it okay for you to feel this way towards someone who DIDN'T DO ANYTHING WRONG!
What is wrong with some of you people? I hope that you are as ugly on the outside as you are in the inside. That way when someone makes a comment about you disgusting them, You know for a split second what these people go through EVERY DAY.
I do not feel like this at all! As a matter of fact, I don't even view them as not being normal. What IS normal? Are you normal? Apparently not according to most standards. It makes me sick for you to even be able to think this way while understanding what it is like to be gay. You probably had it super easy.
