Is it normal to feel depressed in my birthday?

Is about to be my birthday and in the last years I always feel depressed on that day. I think it might happen again.

I hate birthdays. On birthdays of person I love or even mine, bad stuff happens and I'm left crying. That happens everytime so I don't anticipate birthdays at all. Normal for me.

What is the difference feeling depressed during birthday compared to the other days? Why do people's date of births need to be celebrated as if it's some sort of accomplishment and a special kind of day anyway?

    • Some cultures don't celebrate birthdays because they see a birthday is one more year closer to their death, not a celebration for when they were born.

I personally don't care much for celebrating my birthday. It seems nacassistic and people expect too much on their birthdays.

It's justifiable on why whichever cultures you mentioned don't celebrate their birthdays. It's pretty depressing thinking about one's own age increases a number which is an approaching sign of getting older and moving toward death by each years.

I've to agree with you on some people who are expecting too much for their birthdays. I know this college dude in his 20's who got truly butthurt and sulked like a child because nobody wished him his birthday. That's what happened to him for expecting too much for his birthdays as a grown ass adult. He's obviously desperate anticipating for attentions from a bunch of strangers. It was pretty embarrassing, lol.

I don't really care about my birthday, tho I do get depressed around Christmas, New years and my parents birthdays.

It's one more blatant, in your face indicator all of us are growing older, my parents are already pensioners and every year is just another reminder their deaths are one year closer.

And one day I will be absolutely devastated and broken and will probably drink myself into unconsciousness...

      • Christmas and, especially new years, is always the worst time of year for me.

That's totally normal because it's a reminder of time passing and less of your life being left to you. You can always ignore it: tell family & friends you're not having a birthday this year and stick to it. Of course, you'll miss out on the gifts and the hugs, up to you.

Even at my advanced age (73) I still like my birthdays because it's one of the few times my daughter and all my grandchildren are in the same place at the same time and we usually go out for a nice meal. That's the fun part, but it's also a strong reminder to me that my time is running out and I'd better do all the things I want to do before it's too late.

I think it's normal to get the b-day blues.
It's a marker that yet another year has passed and that one is no closer to "having one's s*** all figured out".
But ya know what...one never does. One never will. And maybe that's the beauty of old age. Instead of having all the answers, one is satisfied with the answers one already has and rather than looking for more I am...er I mean one is comfortable taking a nap, watching wheel of fortune and calling it a day

Could you describe it more detailed in what kind of way you feel depressed about it?

I love birthdays, xmas etc, but yeah this xmas I felt kinda depressed. I wouldnt say it's the holiday or whatever but maybe its something in your personal life or something to do with the birthday

How often do you get days where it's ok to pamper yourself and be the center of attention if you desire? Yes, it's just another day but I say enjoy it while you have the opportunity.

I don't get depressed but I don't exactly get excited either.
