Is it normal to feel bad for murderers

When I see people murderers get sent to prison I feel bad. Because obviously they have a serious mental condition or something....I don't know...am I alone in that?...

Some of them are just horrible people that like to kill others. Your sympathy is misplaced.

People who are driven to murder are mentally ill, usually caused by the callousness of our society. If there were more empathy rather than scorn and vindictiveness in the world, maybe there would be less murderers.

I would guess the two most common motives to murder are greed and revenge. They wouldn't require the murderer to be mentally ill, just selfish, desperate or angry.

That said who isn't a little mentally ill?

Most kill for greed, revenge, or sexual pleasure of some kind (in the case of a lot of serial killers), so don't feel bad for them. They deserve whatever consequences they came upon themselves. These individuals have no regard for human life and I do admit, that can be brought upon by sociopathy and narcissism, but mostly they're just bad people.

  • Not all, not even most, have mental problems. Some even take pride in it.

Yes, some that have mental problems deserve pity, they are not only victimizers of others, but themselves, and they are not able to control that. The others, they are just vile.

I understand what you're saying. Some people just can't feel empathy or think ahead even 5 seconds into the future. Their brain state doesn't allow them to. Empathy, foresight, anger control, they're all neurological functions that can be manipulated, if we had the technology to truly manipulate them.

However, I am confident that if a killer were to have that empathy restored to them and fully realize the atrocities they had committed, look at the faces of the families they have destroyed and hurt and saw their victims, they'd likely accept punishment.

I sometimes feel stressed on their behalf. I don't know why. I mean, for the most part, I think it's good that they wind up in prison.

I think some do, yeah. In every prison there are people who shouldn't be there. Where is the cut-off, though, between someone's condition leading them inevitably into murder and someone's condition tending them towards it?

I wonder what country the OP is from, and how people's answers might change if they were from somewhere different. I'm not sure what prison conditions are like in the UK, but I'm to understand that they're particularly bad in the US.

Just from personal opinion, I think prison conditions are better here. Although there's a feeling that women's prisons and open prisons are like hotels. I've worked in women's prisons. They're not like any hotel I'd want to stay in.

It is not normal. I don't think every murderer has some sort of mental condition. Some murderers do it for pure selfish reasons, out of anger. I don't think anyone should feel bad about murderers regardless of their past or mental condition.

I think it's normal. Sometimes I feel that way to. I know that some of them have serious mental disorders or bad pasts or just a bad nature/attitude to make them want to do what they do but I can't help to feel a little bad. I'm not saying that its okay to do what they have done but I just feel bad for them because they didnt have a chance to live a normal life without them wanting to hurt and kill someone and then actually doing it.

They don't always have a serious mental condition. There are some cases I have seen where I can feel some sympathy for the murderer but that is rare. I usually feel kinda empathetic towards either murderer or victim. But that's just me.

I feel you girl! Okay so this is really serious. On the memorial of Sandy Hook, I made 28 angels.
      Deaths
      20 children
      6 staff members
      1 mom
      1 murderer
I made 1 for the murderer because he had a mental disease and played video games for extremely long times a day and just basically didn't have a life.
Before I was done, I lay down in the snow and prayed to God and said,
"Dear Lord, I believe that everyone is an angel and mental illness is a terrible thing and he deserves and angel. If you agree with me, please, let me "mess up" and make 28 angels. I love you. Amen"
And sure enough, God spoke, and told me my beliefs were amazing.

It's normal to feel pity when misfortune falls onto people, even if they brought it upon themselves.

Sorry, just allow me to add to my last point.

By 'brought it on themselves' I mean they chose to act on their greed, anger or just plain acting foolish.

With regards to mental health, being mentally ill doesn't mean you shouldn't be held accountable for your actions, it just means it's more difficult for you to understand the consequences of your actions.

Ask anyone with a mental illness and they will tell you how sick they are with people slapping names on themselves in a ham-fisted manner e.g saying they've got social anxiety when they're actually just shy and expecting to just get away with murder because of it.

I don't know if it's normal, and neither do any of the other people who answered here.

I've read enough about murderers to know that SOME of them are not just ill. Killing, torturing and everything that comes with it is the most intense pleasure they can feel. They don't have a spark of pity for the people they kill, they love the power they have over the life of their victims. While some of them are really ill and have regretted their act , some killer will never regret a thing. So they can burn in hell for all i care.

They're murders. Some are bad and you have got to feel sorry for them you must have a kind and caring heart.

    it's normal.
even if they don't have mental problems, they clearly have some kind of problem. i think you'd be just as cruel if you couldn't have any ounce of sympathy for a murderer.

i completely agree with you, they have a mental disorder of some sort and even though they may have killed someone, any sane human given the option, would rather be happily living at home with a wife and kid, have normal life, and they are not given that its just extra unfortunate that they have to take someone down with them

some people do have reason for killing .....but most of them are professionals....poverty may have made them killers but stll they should be punished.....it's not abnormal to feel for them..

In a way, I agree, even though I think they're where they belong. Prison is such a waste of a life, not to mention money. The ones who are not mentally ill, are in deep ignorance of the damage they've done taking another life. The ones who are ill need help, which our society, doesn't want to provide. We need to evolve as a society to deal with both problems, instead of just shutting them up in prisons.
