Is it normal to feel awkward after someone says this to me...

I'm a lesbian, but I'm not over the top about it - I have a stylish short hair cut, I dress in mens clothes (they fit) etc. There is a new woman in my department who sits next to me, we chat occassionally... one time when we were talking she said to me (she wasn't being rude) "You should have been born a boy.", Upon asking her why she thought that, she replied with "The way you speak, the way you dress, the way you carry yourself..." I wasn't necessarily weirded out by that until she continued on. "...You've got a very nice face. Sometimes I think to myself, God should have made you a boy. I would have flirted with you already." I'm in a very committed relationship and I know that she is married - Is it normal for me to feel weird about those comments. I found them unnecessary even though I know she was complimenting me.

  • Sounds like she may have struggled to find a place for you in her own mind that was understandable for her, and now she has and she wants you to know about it.

Perhaps because you dress like a man, she's assuming you want to be a man. She probably thought she was giving you the ultimate compliment, but really it was insensitive.

I have a close female friend that is straight but likes to dress in men's clothing as well. She gets a crazy amount of flack from people, most assume that she's lesbian.

    Yes, it's normal.
She IS married, and I find it a little inappropriate to tell someone that you are not close to that they are not appropriate for their gender. That shit's outdated.

  • People say things without thinking sometimes, and some people don't understand girls that wear guy clothing. Most of my friends do that too, they all get asked about why they do it! Quite annoys them tbh x

Putting the fact that she's married to the side, some people just don't have the gift of gab, you know? Their intent will be good, but they'll say it in a way that could offend. Don't let it bother you. Just remind yourself that she meant well.

  • Thanks all for reiterating what I thought... just really caught me off guard, especially as I'm quite conservative with my comments to others!
