Is it normal to feel awkward about the content that gets through here?

I love this site, I think it provides a wonderful place for people to support each other and do a lot of reflection. That's awesome.

I know that some questions are controversial in nature... for the most part I'm fine with that. I don't like the concept of censorship generally.

There are a few things that make me uncomfortable, though... and that's the polls / questions / comments that get posted that are about highly controversial, illegal acts.

I see pedophiles buddying up to support each other over a post where the question is asked if it's normal to rape your own daughter. I see stories and comments about statutory rape and incest all the time... I know most are fake, but still.

I just... feel weird about it. I want to ask the admin if there has ever been a question like "I torture, rape, and murder people, IIN?" and was it passed through? I mean, where does line get drawn with content?

Like I said I don't like censorship, but man... some things I see make me feel like it could be appropriate in some cases. I know this is anonymous, but I wouldn't want someone to know I post on a site where its OK to post about how much you love incestuous, pedophilic rape. Is it normal to feel a bit uncomfortable this site is a safe haven for ANY topic?

Yes, it's normal to feel awkward. Some of them are pretty clever, too. They don't give you any indication that it's going to be a disgusting post until you click on it and read some of the details.

We reject plenty of horrible stuff. It's a fine line. There's a difference between confessing to something horrible/illegal and saying that you enjoy thinking about that thing or you have urges to do that thing but you haven't acted on them. Often we'll let the latter through but not the former.

    • I suppose that does make sense... I mean most people have had thoughts or urges to do things that are illegal. I, for one, have always thought about how exciting it would be to be a part of a big heist involving famous art pieces or something, but would never act on it.

I suppose it's just a typical reaction where I want to reject the notion that people are out there contemplating doing horrible things, especially to young children... but if we censor their ability to even talk to it, we censor an outlet where they can get it out in a safe way - by talking about it, rather than taking action.

Comments as well. But only as long if it's against IIN's code of conduct or is attacking you personally.

Most of the inappropiate posts are faked, so don't stress too much about them. But if there is some posts that really upset you, then you can report them and Udi will get back to you :)
