Is it normal to feel almost emotionless?

Things that other people seem to find extremely emotional (finding out a family member has cancer) I am hardly affected by. I understand everything but I just don't get upset. It is good in some ways as I can keep thinking logical and not get depressed but it can be hard to sympathize with people. Is this normal?

Outward displays of emotion aren't especially a great trait. That you can keep your emotions in check puts you far and away ahead of most on this planet and I would urge you to use it to your advantage, not worry that it may be abnormal.
Anyone in a command situation who can "keep his/her head" has a leg up on the situation and will instill calm and confidence on those around them, in stressful situations.
I expect if you chose a life path that utilizes this trait, you will do well in life.

I always find this concept a bit confusing. I don't get depressed or overly emotional over sad news. I keep calm and rational. But I can still offer sympathy without faking it. I give them strength and support and let them be emotional without feeding into it. I can absorb it in a sense. It is a logical reaction to bad news to be upset. I just don't tend to let it blind me. But I can still feel it. I'm not sure what to tell you OP. I think plenty of people feel the way you do, numb. There are a lot of horrible things in this world and we sometimes shut down to prevent pain. But pain is a part of life. The thing about logic is that it isn't about not being emotional, it is how you handle those emotions. And being sympathetic is how you treat others when they are feeling emotional.

well said, id also like to mention empathy rather than sympathy as empathy helps the other person become strong since you are understanding them rather than pitying them which is the definition of sympathy I believe :)

Most of the people I know are on the opposite end of the spectrum. They lack perspective, getting overly emotional and aggressive about trivial issues. I don't know if you're normal, or even if I am, but I wish more people shared your outlook.

Logicalness is actually a great trait to have, one doesn't have to emotionless to have it though, but I understand what you are getting at. I don't think you were always this way, and I don't think you should settle for being this way either because life isn't about being logical and level headed it's about love. To me at least. Sometimes its also easy to believe that about ourselves when it's not entirely true. I use to be very deadened to things like that, but I don't think you're emotionless. Maybe see someone?

    • Its kind of been my whole life that I have been like this. I still feel everything normally but just not as strong as others seem to. Its kind of wierd actually, the two words that people most often use to describe me are level headed (I dont care if that is already 2 words) and kind. In this case those words suggest opposite sides. I'm not really sure about it, I might be depressed but I also think its just who I am. It doesn't have any extreme impacts so I accept it.

Do you kind of 'know' how much of a reaction you should have to situations? I'm much the same so I just want to see if the similarities keep going.

        • Yes I do. A few times I have tried to kind of fake it but it just doesn't work.
