Is it normal to feel a static electric shock when i grt out of a car?

I feel a static electric shock say 30-50% of the times I climb out of a car then touch the metal part of the door. But they always come in bouts of about a few weeks and then they become less frequent. Ok I could be imagining this last bit as I've never actually logged the frequency of events. But...Is this normal? It doesn't seem to be happening to anyone else climbing out of the car with me. It's very irritating and sometimes painful.

This happens to me mostly when it is cold. Not only my car but every car I get into. Sometimes even when the car is Idol, that's when the engine is not even on.

All I do is to make sure I let the car hurt me than touching other things like metal gate, ATM machine etc because the shock becomes more pain painful

Attach an anti static strap to your car, they are extremely cheap or you can use those antenna type ones.

It can be dangerous especially when you fill the car with petrol/gas.

I have this happen too . On days it would happened it would happen on different cars and not happen to any one else so I knew it was me , not the cars . I've met a few people over the years that have it happen and like you it comes and goes. It doesn't happen as often now that I'm older .

    Isn't this a fire hazard?

    You're probably not imagining it.

There's a possibility that you have a wire loose or something like that in your car which is causing the static discharge, or that the wiring in your car is configured in such a manner in which that happens. It's probably not even an issue, especially if your car is over 8 years old.

But if you have the money and time and a good mechanic, you can take the car to a mechanic and tell them what's going on. It's usually something stupid like a wire that moved over 2 cm too far, but they may be able to put it back into place.

Wasn't there a thing about this? Like, I seem to remember there being a campaign or something that said something like "The shock you feel is for your protection", talking about how you should touch your car to discharge static before pumping gas, I think, to prevent fires. I can't find anything about such a campaign, though, so I might just have problems.
