Is it normal to fall "out" of a dream?

Sometimes I dream that I tripped, or was pushed, or jumped off of something. Whenever that happens, I get this sensation of falling, and then I get jerked awake. The jerking feeling almost feels like an impact with the bed. It's like the floor of the dream was fragile and I fell out of it and landed on my bed. Is that normal?

If you are inclined to such beliefs; it's your astral body rejoining your physical body.

Happens to nearly all of us. I think they're called hypnic jerks. I've heard plenty of theories as to why we do it. From the frankly ridiculous (because we are "falling" asleep, which is just wordplay) to the potentially interesting (that it's a behaviour left over from being primates who slept in trees who needed a reflex to wake them up rather than fall to their death).

I think that's an awsome way to wake up.

It happens to me but it's really fucking horrible when it's a scary dream

  • I once had a dream that I jumped into a swimming pool, went underwater, started drowning, and I woke up under the covers =P

What it is, when you are falling asleep, the brain sometimes interrupts this as dying or losing consciousness and give the body a jolt to wake them up :-)

It doesn't happen when I'm falling asleep, it only happens once I'm dreaming and have been sleeping for awhile. And it only happens if I begin to fall in the dream.

Not sure what you mean precisely but sometimes when I am on the verge of sleeping or dreaming I feel like I am falling backwards (if I sleep on my back, that's when this happens) and then I wake up as if I fell and hit the bed. Like I tense every muscle in my body and at first I'm scared and then I realize what happened.

Also a lot of times when I dream that I jump off a cliff or fly and for some reason whatever I was using to fly stops working and I fall, my stomach gets tingly and if I hit the ground most of my body gets very tingly and I usually wake up the moment I hit the ground

I'm pretty sure those are hypnic jerks, too. Mine don't happen when I'm falling asleep, though, only once I've been participating in a dream.
