Is it normal to fall for someone online?

I've always thought people who developed feelings for another online were quite pathetic.
But now I have. I have been talking to them for a while. There sometimes can be a bit of flirting but it's mostly just friendly so I don't know if they feel the same way too. They are funny, kind, amazing, interesting and intelligent.
I really want something more with this person but I don't know if that will happen. I am just happy when I see a message from them. Because it's online, I feel awkward asking to take it further and I fear they will reject me.
So is it normal to fall for someone online?

It happens. Emotions are emotions, and I think they can be amplified online. Plus it's a situation that you're removed from so it's easier to see the good and ignore the bad - or to have the bad hidden from you.

Regardless, I still think it's real.

The internet is just a tool to meet soneone. Why should that be less legitimate a means to increase your dating pool than remain confined to your immediate friend circle given that girls don't like to be approached in public either?

It's totally normal but you need to know that your feelings might evaporate tout de suite upon first physical contact because things like appearance, speaking voice, dressing style, smell, skin texture, and lovemaking style are WAY MORE IMPORTANT THAN WE THINK!!!! My advice: get photos, then do phone calls, then get them to email you some video clips of themselves. Then you only have the last three to worry about.

    Yeah it can happen.

You have to be careful some people are really good at telling you what you want to hear and they are only after one thing.
