Is it normal to facebook message your friend's new girlfriend?

My platonic male friend has been dating a new girlfriend for a few months. He is so exited with his new relationship and talks about her all the time. He says he wants us to meet, but it hasn't worked out yet. I decided to Facebook message the girlfriend to introduce myself, let her know I'm looking forward to meeting her, and she has picked a great guy. She wrote me back and said she has heard of me and knows that we are all trying to meet and have a drink sometime. The next day my friend texted me and said his girlfriend wants to break up with him because of what I Facebook messaged to her. He wants me not to tell the girlfriend of this conversation. He told me it's odd of me to contact someone he's dating or any friend of his for that matter on Facebook. Is it Normal to facebook message your friend's girlfriend/friends?

Dude. What. The. Fuck. Seriously what the fuck!! That's ridiculous. I've never heard of such a thing. It's not your fault. Something must be wrong with her... That's the lowest weirdest reason to break up with someone for.

Bitches be trippin', dude. She's too dramatic. Your friend's better off without that cunt.

Well just addressing what *you* did first:

I would have waited to message her directly, or let him know I was planning on messaging her, and/or asking if he thinks it's a good idea, or to let her know himself. You never know how people are and how they'll react. Not everyone is as open, direct, confident and secure as you seem to be, and it may be a delicate situation. Some people are very private and shy, or very selective of their friends/contacts, and also, some people are weird about their Fb. You have to respect boundaries. Even if you don't think there's anything wrong with it, you never know - this could have been linked to a traumatizing situation in her past, Idk, who knows why. What you did wasn't horrible, but it could have made her uncomfortable.

So it is kind of weird to do this directly, but think about it this way - would you Fb message your female friend's new boyfriend before she introduced you in any way? Seems weirder, even though it would still be innocent, right? Ykw? Because girls naturally go there when they meet another girl.

However, in terms of her reaction according to your friend, I think it's a little extreme to want to break up over that. It's not like he gave out her telephone number or address and you showed up at her house unannounced. She replied to you in a cordial, non-psycho manner that made you think she was normal. It seems like maybe, out of this whole situation, she's the one who is the least normal.

  • You are seen as a potential threat. Women are territorial creatures. That's why I just stick to dumpster sluts.

Well I face booked my friends boyfriend when I first met him. Actually I think it she suggested it too. Since than I lost contact with her and so has her boyfriend. I know its not exactly the same situation but I did it and it was not an issue. In fact I have a few of my friends boyfriends/girlfriends on my Facebook. I talk to them like normal people. I would never try to take anyone who is taken either. I don't believe in that sort of thing. My friends don't seem to mind this either. I think we all kind of trust each other although I have not seen a lot of my Facebook friends in a long time. I have a very mixed group of friends of boys and girls and most of the people I know are taken or married at this point. So most of them are either dating friends I already have and the rest of us know or I met their boyfriend/girlfriend once or twice even if not having a lot of contact with that person.
