I am a 23 year old female and have been together with my bf for 5 years. Whenever we have sex we usually do some sort of suffocation, either its him putting a plastic bag on my head ot its me covering his nose and mouth during sex. We both love doing this as its very exciting for us. Is this normal?

At least what you're doing is marginally safer than choking. I'm very open-minded when it comes to porn, but something I find truly obscene about modern porn is how it has normalised neck-compression.
You two are asphyxiating each other, and blocking the supply of oxygen to the brain has risks that should be perfectly fucking obvious to anyone with even a rudimentary understanding of human physiology. Your brain uses about 20% of the oxygen your lungs put in your blood, reducing the supply of oxygen to any living tissue causes damage and cell-death, and since the neurons in your brain can't regenerate, any damage done by oxygen deprivation is cumulative.
That's bad (and stupid) enough, but obstructing the veins and arteries in the neck is insanely dangerous. The pressure in the carotid artery supplying blood to to brain is much higher than that in the jugular vein that returns blood to the heart. If both artery and vein are compressed with equal pressure, it's very easy for there to be a rapid increase of blood pressure in the brain, since the artery continues to pump blood into the brain, but its return path is blocked. Nobody knows what weaknesses there might be in the blood vessels of their brain and that of their sexual partners, and we regularly hear about young, healthy, physically fit people suddenly dropping dead due to a cranial aneurysm bursting. Sex play that involves neck compression can - and does - result in a fatal stroke, a heart attack or permanent physical disability.
