Is it normal to eat raw ground beef?

Okay, it's been disturbing me for some time now. A few weeks ago I walked into the break/lunch room at work and noticed a strange smell, well, turns out the smell was a pound of raw ground beef, sitting on a styrofoam tray being eaten like it was a slice of pie. I tried to contain my horror so I politely just kind of scooted my way back out of the room. Seems I'm not the only one, because whenever she's in there gobbling the stuff down, NOBODY else goes in there. I kind of feel bad.

And now I can't help but seeing her eat raw ground beef whenever I see her.

Is it normal? Anyone else witness a similar truly horrific thing?

Was it steak tartare? It's perfectly fine to eat raw meat as long as it's fresh. No different than eating sashimi.

    • It might have been steak tartare, either way, it was raw meat. I've always been told to cook meat thoroughly because of bacteria and food-born illnesses like e.coli etc.

Also, I've heard that our systems arent designed to digest raw meat, excluding fish.

Maybe she needs more iron in her diet? Eating raw ground beef is pretty risky.

yes, it's absolutely normal. i've been eating raw beef meat with salt since I was a kid. My parents do the same thing. Also, every time I get my hands on fresh beef, the first thing I do is make a steak tartar (I always have all the ingredients in my home, including capers and worchestershire sauce).

It's not that bad. It's in Ethiopian culture.

I don't think it's normal. You can get sick, e. coli, etc from eating raw meat. Besides that, it just looks and smells so disgusting I can't see why anyone would ENJOY eating it. Yuck..

If its being eaten completely rare than that's not safe. Semi-rare should be fine and of course well-done is. Meat left uncooked is dangerous. The heat kills off bacteria and parasites.
